What Does 'Fashion' Have to do with Love?
01/30/2012 -
Oh Valentine's Day. A time for romance. A time for rekindling an old flame. A time for putting the spark back into an important relationship. This is the month we take the time to show the one we love just how much we love them. How exciting! Love is an amazing word that conjures up so many emotions.
Love makes us happy, Love makes us mad, Love makes us crazy, and of course, love can make us excited. Love gives us a special skip in our day and turns lonely nights in memories of a lifetime. Love makes us strong and Love can make us weak. History has been changed because of Love. Love is seen in a child, Love is felt from a pet, Love has started wars and Love has healed the sick. Love can make us cry and Love can make us laugh and smile. Men fight for Love and fight over love, women long for love and give birth because of Love. Love is a heart, Love is a cross.
SO, what does ‘fashion’ have to do with love?
If you are planning a date night with the one you love; here is some advice. The time that you take to ‘look’ great shows the other person how important they are to you – you took the time to look especially beautiful. That means something.
Ladies…Buy a new dress, put on your heels and lipstick, take the time to do your hair and have a great evening with your dates!
Men…Shave, get your hair cut, trim your nose and ear hair, polish your shoes
and make a reservation early…show up with a great smile, clean car, flowers and bottle of champagne (Even if you are married) and start the night off right.
I have included a letter below from a client I have worked with for some time now. I thought it was a great expression of truth about how fashion correlates with LOVE and thought I would share it with you during this month of love!
Warmest,
Mila
Do you still need the perfect Valentine’s Day gift for your special someone? Whether it is Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, a birthday or anniversary, the gift of MODA is perfect for any occasion. Please call us if you have questions about gift certificates.
Mila,
I have to submit this letter to you and I hope that you will share it with others. I am a married man, with several children and I work hard all day, as does my wife. She is working part time, and taking care of our children while managing a home too. She recently came home and shared an article with me where a woman said SHE DID NOT NEED TO DRESS FOR HER HUSBAND since he loved her for who she was not how she looks. Well, I agree completely; however, I hope that I can help some of the women you meet and serve understand why that statement can do more harm than it can good to a relationship, plus I must add: My wife does not agree to the statement in totality.
True I love my wife and the love is so much deeper than outer appearance but let me ask you and your readers: Do you like it when your husband takes the time to hand write a LOVE LETTER TO YOU? I write love letters to my wife as often as my heart is prompted. See, a love letter is a lot like fashion for a man and his wife. When I write a love letter to my wife I am taking the time to invest in her so that she feels better and can read how I feel about her. It is just something about a written page that is so much more than spoken words. I take the time to find the right card, the right paper and the right words to express how amazing she is and how proud I am of her as a woman. Each line is an expression of my love for her. No two love letters are alike. Each one must express something different. I do not have to write her love letters to make her feel good, and my love letter is not a requirement of our love. I write them because I do love her, and I know that she loves the special communication I send and understands the commitment to time I make to write. A love letter is all about her!! Now that being said, I just warm up when I give her the letter. I can’t help it!! Just knowing that my words will make her smile and let her know that she is special is all I need to keep me more passionate than I already was. There are some great romantic and special nights after a love letter day!
Well now to the point. Us men: well we are visual. We can't help it; it’s just the way the Lord made us. So when I see my wife, I love the fact that she has taken the time to put on a great outfit, or do her hair or fix her eyes. There is no scent better in the world than the one that reminds you of your wife! When she takes the time to get dressed and I know that she is thinking of me when she does it, well that just makes me feel special and warm. You see, when my wife dresses, she doesn’t have to do it to show me she loves me, nor does she have to do it to please me: But like a great love letter: When she dresses and I know she is thinking of me, it sure makes me feel better. Her clothing is the same as my envelope. Each piece of her fashion is like the individual lines I write in a love letter. Each morning I know she is preparing a love letter for me. My children see her preparation and care as she looks her best for them as much as she does for herself. Also one more thing I can add: When I get home or sometimes when I just wake up: I can tell you that Like a Good Love Letter: Great looking fashion and her display of something that is just for me, sure does lead to some romantic nights. So be certain and let your women know that the other article and comments are right: NO WOMAN HAS TO DRESS FOR A MAN OR HIS APPROVAL, but if they like love letters and are trying to find a way to express their love, there is something about a great outfit that says I LOVE YOU. Thanks for letting me share.

Fashion and style aren't meant to be boring. Fashion has always been a place of inspiration...something we use to show who we are, or who we would like to be.
Even an 'average' sweater can be special with the right accessories and pants. Something you wear, each and every day, should make a statement about who you are. When you purchase a piece of clothing, you should always look for something unique. Here are a few unique pieces that make a statement but are versatile enough to be worn for multiple events.
It is just as easy and takes the same amount of energy to put on a 'boring' sweater than it does to put on a unique sweater...and both can keep you warm if that is the purpose. Be inspired. Everyday.

A DECEMBER TO REMEMBER
There is just something beautiful about the winter holidays that makes me think of cold sunshiny days,
wintery nights, frosted mornings and the hope for snowy weekends. It really doesn't matter where I am in the country, one just can’t help but get a chill when December comes around. I grew up in San Diego and the idea of a "Winter Wonderland" was something we saw on TV, read in books or listened to on the radio. I love experiencing a true winter now that I am in Tennessee, but am aware that the winter holidays are festive and fun because for more than weather. Holidays are a time of celebration; they are a time to set aside our worries and come together with family, friends and peers to celebrate life!
So this year, think about arriving in style, dressing to impress and bringing the life of the party with you in the clothes and colors you are wearing. Throw in some great party gifts and a big smile and I can assure you the party will rise to meet your happy mood. So read on and see some of my holiday secrets for looking great all day and then turning up the night time lights with a few additions or subtractions to the evening ensemble! I am so excited about this holiday season and I have so much to be thankful for, as I am certain you do as well. So let us do our part to make this a December to remember. Dress up, brighten the office and light up the party with great fashion, style and super company. A great party begins with you…and when you look great you feel fabulous!!!
HOLIDAY FASHION
The goal for this holiday season is to stand out and make a statement - every time you walk into a room! Sequins, lace, bold colors and metallics are what you should be focused on! If you are wearing jeans (Dark wash, vertical grain, no whiskering and threading the same color of the jean), wear a pair of heels that make a statement! Glitter or bright red, but don't be boring! Dresses can have sequins, be embellished with jewels around the neck or have a simple design in a bold color. If you are going from work to a holiday party...keep your black pants on and throw on a top like one below to give your outfit an added kick. If you only have time for a purse and accessory change, make sure to have a 'holiday' bag that makes a statement...gold metallics are everywhere and earrings and bracelets should be the part of the outfit that puts you in the holiday spirit.
Click here for a great TV segment featuring Mila. The Ladies' Night Out event has already passed, but the holiday fashion tips are something you should see!

November Newsletter..Happy Thanksgiving!
11/22/2011 -
Hi Friends!
There is something so good about Thanksgiving that it transcends all races, religions and nationalities. Everyone has something to be thankful for while we enjoy our time with friends and family. Let’s be thankful for all that we have been given, remember those who are less fortunate than we are and those who have lost loved ones, homes and jobs. Reach out to them, invite them into your homes and share THANKS GIVING with them. It’s not about things, clothes or position. So please, while we get comfortable and relax, take time to drop to your knees and say Thank You to Our God who has blessed us during hard times and let each of us extend His love and will to our family, friends, and those in need.
I have compiled a few fashionable suggestions for the Thanksgiving holiday while you are visiting with family and friends. Casual, chic and comfortable – and will let you eat plenty of turkey! I hope you and yours have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Mila
I was honored to be interviewed by USA Today last week and included as an expert in Friday’s edition. Please click the link to read the article, “Tips on picking out high-quality gifts.”
Even on your most casual day, you can have something that says exciting! A pair of jeans in a purple, red or green color paired with a neutral sweater. Even when you need a pair of comfortable shoes for running around all day with family - it doesn't mean you must give up the 'cute' factor. Try a pair of flats that have some attitude, fashionable accents or color! Flat boots or ones that have a slight wedge are comfortable and chic - try with a skirt or skinny jeans. You can't go wrong with a sweater dress, faux fur, a cape, wrap or oversized sweater paired with some skinny jeans or leggings. Comfortable and fashionable...The choices below can be found at Nordstrom.com and Dillards.com.

October Newsletter - Invest in your neighbors, the world around you, and then invest in YOU!
11/23/2011 -
THREE GREATEST INVESTMENTS OF ALL TIME
Well we are headed into my favorite time of year. The leaves are changing, the air is getting cooler and I love the fall sports and school activities. There is nothing like sitting in a stadium and watching football or attending a school fall play as big or little ones express their creative sides. The last few years have been tough on America and the world. We have seen turmoil in the markets, neighbors who have lost homes and jobs and relationships break apart under the weight of the changing family financial wellbeing. So while my joy is complete in the one I believe in, I would be remiss if I did not share the 3 greatest investments of all time.
The first is your neighbor! Take a few minutes and get out and speak with the people who live around you and work with you - and in many cases, are in need of a kind word. The days get shorter and the nights get longer, and it is shown that people go through some emotional changes during the fall and holiday seasons. You may even be someone in need of a positive relationship in your life. You can build up yourself by building up others. Bake some cookies for a neighbor, go over and help with the yard, fix an extra cup of coffee and knock on a door. Grab someone and take them to lunch. Look around your neighborhood, and visit someone who is shut in, or watch neighbors kids for a few hours and give a couple some alone time.
You may know someone who lost a job, maybe even someone at your place of employment. Do not avoid them, but rather reach out to them. Let them know that the job may have changed things but it did not change them and it did not change you. So visit, offer some help and often we can make the biggest investment by just listening. It costs nothing but it sure does offer some great returns.
Secondly, you can improve the world around you. This may sound like a daunting task, however we know that a good word and a kind act spreads joy. Look beyond your immediate surroundings and think about our military serving around the world and write a soldier a letter of thanks. What about the challenges in the Mideast and Europe? Crazy times require more than mere mankind can solve. So take time to remember those less fortunate the next time you are in prayer. Become informed about what is happening in America and with our global neighbors. Informed people can make better choices as a people when we understand what is really going on with people! If your company has a charitable program, get them to contribute to local and global charities. Feed the poor, medicate the sick and house the homeless. It all starts one person at a time doing one act at a time. Invest in the world around you and watch how the seeds you sow return to you 1000 fold. I have found when I tend to care about someone else and lift them up in prayer, my world seems a little lighter and a whole lot brighter!
Now the third investment is to invest in you. Take the early nights and cooler days to rest, or enjoy a book. Decide this fall season to adjust your life so you can work on your body, mind and spirit. Challenge your mind to learn something new, find or resurrect a hobby and get active again. Throw out some old clothes and donate them to Good Will or other organizations. Have a garage sale and treat you or the family to something special with the proceeds. Start each day with a boost by putting on your best look. These days can already be getting grey, but you can change every picture by dressing with some color. I always smile more when I am dressed in vivid colors or have on my favorite outfit. Decide to learn a new language or brush up on life away from the normal by visiting an art gallery or museum. Change your environment and you can change your attitude.
The three greatest investments in the world are your neighbors, your world and yourself. Fall is here, the weather is changing and this world needs more smiles, more caring neighbors and the bright colors fashion has to offer to make it a better place. You can feel great each night when you close your eyes, knowing you made a difference. What a great way to go to sleep, knowing the world is a better place today because you planted some seeds that will improve it tomorrow. Now read on and see how I can help you invest in you and give to charity at the same time. Fashion and fall are a great time to break out some amazing outfits, colors, scarves, jackets and more. Clean out your closets, give away some clothes that do not work for you but may work for someone else. You can warm your body and your heart by warming someone else’s.
I look forward to hearing from you and getting your response to my blogs, invitations to special events and overall comments. May we focus on the eternal and bring added joy this fall season this world.
As the weather cools down and the days get shorter, add a splash of color into your wardrobe to keep you feeling happy and energized! Here are some casual ways to add a bit of spice to your day...all available on Nordstrom.com!

September Newsletter - You are Always Making a Statement
09/03/2011 -
.jpg)
You make a statement everyday with your image alone...
Do you know what kind of statement you are making?
Truth is, this is a visual world – and you are making a statement, no matter what.
What separates you from your competition? If nobody sees your resume, your image determines your first impression.
Does your image inspire YOU, your husband or wife, your friends, colleagues and children?
Does your image say success, trust, competence, respect, confidence, intelligence, joy?
I have enjoyed a busy summer of meeting with individuals and companies, sharing the value of fashion, style and creating a Professional or Personal Brand that says something about what a company believes or a person wants to share. In a recent seminar I conducted, it was suggested that not everyone needs to dress in a manner that makes a statement. In fact, some would suggest that image means nothing, and to think about your image is only to cater to a superficial world based on looks and not more important values such as integrity, justice and quality of life. Truth is, this is a visual world – and you are making a statement, no matter what. Human beings form opinions based on what we see and hear, and to suggest anything less is to be dishonest with ourselves. For example; if I say the color GREEN, you already see the color in your mind, just as if I say the color RED, you already see red no matter how much you try to make your mind see another color. The same is true about our image.
What if I told you that the pictures you see below were the offices of two successful accountants
and you had to hire one based only on what you SEE.

Clearly, image matters. You would ASSUME that the person who worked at the organized desk was more competent and you might even 'trust' them more - the same is true for our image. I had someone tell me that image was not important for a person in the construction business. If this is true, then a construction worker can dress in any attire and still make the same statement as any other construction worker, right? Wrong. When we apply this thought to its practical application, we find that the construction worker who does not care about his or her appearance is indeed helping others form an opinion about them – and opinions that are most likely negative which hurt their income, future, reputation and so on.
Let’s work through this scenario: Two workers show up for work and they both work with mud and concrete.
The first one has on clothes that are stained and certainly fit the occupation, but they are as clean as they can be and FIT properly, the shirt is properly tucked in or buttoned up, their hair is clean and combed and their shoes are not neglected.
The second appears with holes in their pants, shoes are dirty and not taken care of, and their shirt is dirty and sloppily hanging on their body.
Which one would you hire based upon image alone? Better yet, which would you feel is more concerned with details and has a sense of respect not only for themselves, but for you as their client and in the work they will perform?
Now once the work has begun, you may find that the second worker actually does more complete work and is the better employee. I can assure you, no image that can take place of performance, but that is not the issue. The issue is; which worker gave you a better first impression? The sad fact is that the second may not have been hired EVEN THOUGH HE OR SHE HAD MORE EXPERIENCE AND WAS BETTER FOR THE JOB. So in today’s competitive world, who stands the better chance of success? The person who cares about their image and does a great job, or the person who does a great job but could care less about their image? You see, sometimes we dress down or say image is not important for our industry, but in reality, our image can turn out to be the most important factor. The very fact you choose to care less about your image does indeed make a statement. The statement says, "I do not care how about I look or what you think of me.” Or in the case of this particular seminar, you are saying that an entire industry is not worthy of looking good because their work does not require a better looking image.
Saying ‘I don’t care how I look’ is dangerous, personally and professionally.
- It is difficult to make up for a bad first impression.
- When you look good, you feel good and you produce greater results.
- A poor image can hurt others trust not only in you as a person but also in your ability.
- People may choose to work with others who are less qualified simply because they are perceived to be more competent.
- You might be the best at what you do - but many people will never have the privilege of working wtih you becuase you do not represent yourself in the best way possible.
We are ALWAYS making a statement when we dress for work, leisure or play. The question comes down to this…What kind of statement are you making? I believe you should always strive to make a statement that counts and one that says you care not only for yourself, but for others.
I am here to help you create the statement that you want to make, every time you walk into a room. Fall is the perfect time to rethink your image, wardrobe or personal brand. I would be honored to help you. Consultations are always complimentary.
Warmest,
Mila

-Mila Grigg, President and Founder
Fashion is about more than just your clothes. Fashion encompasses all of your look, language and living. Fashion starts at your head and ends at your toes. Fashion is just one mode for your personal expression, it is a way of acting and it is a way of communicating. Fashion is your advertisement about who you are, what you believe and what you want to share with the world. Fashion is not based on income, but it does reflect your character. Fashion is all about style, dress, conduct and your verbal and non-verbal expressions.
Does your fashion help you to stand out in a crowd - is your personal image/brand easily recognizable and distinguishable? Fashion is your mirror to the world. When the world looks at you, what do you reflect to them? Fashion is not sexist at all; fashion is for men and women, young and old and exists all over the world. Fashion crosses all racial and national barriers while allowing for the expression of cultural pride and history. Fashion is about the clothes you wear, the jewelry and accessories that bring purpose and flavor to your visual recipe and the cologne or perfumes you use to create an aroma of attraction or fragrance of excitement. Your skin, your eyes, your clothing, your language, your manners, your jewels, your hair and your smile are all a part of your fashion.
MODA Image Consulting is all about giving your fashion a boost - or for some, a start. We can help your fashion grow, change, better reflect who you are and who you want to be. We can bring pizzazz to a romance, a raise at the office, and a WOW at the home. Fashion is always making a statement.
- Is your statement improving every year or are you just keeping the status quo?
- Are you blending in with everything else like a black and white picture?
- Is your fashion improving or disintegrating?
- Do you have an energy that makes you pleasant to be around, or has fear of fashion led you down the road of dull and stale?
There is no time than better than the present to define your fashion, reignite your closet, open up your wardrobe and create new looks, invest in a new statement, improve how you see yourself and influence how others see you. MODA is here from head to toe...from comb to shoes...from inner conflict to outer reflection. Make fashion work for you. People will say it’s just clothing, it’s not important or it’s shallow. For me, fashion is an expression of who you are, what you believe and what you want your legacy to be. Fashion is a tool of expression and a means for communicating with everyone that sees you, even when you do not see them.
So here are a few great ideas for late summer and early fall. Men, you can express who you are and add some freshness to your ‘fashion’ and image with a new cologne, watch or casual clothing. We tend to get confused with casual – you can still be comfortable, fashionable AND casual. There is more to casual than jeans and tennis shoes. Here are a few ideas for late summer looks that are great. (All looks below available at Nordstrom.com).

Women, let’s not get stuck in the heat and Indian summers without some color and changes. Accessories and easy versatile pieces are the keys to a unique wardrobe! (All items below available at Nordstrom.com).

Here is a sneak peak of fall colors - and a few examples of these vibrant shades from Oscar's fall line...Enjoy!
Bamboo, a surprising fall hue, brings a warm, exotic flavor to the season.
Radiant Emberglow, a traditional autumnal tone, emanates the warmth of a glowing fire — the perfect panacea to the crisp air of fall.
Offering a sense of continuity from spring, dynamic Honeysuckle adds a bold punctuation point.
Phlox, a magical, deep purple with a hint of mystery, is an outstanding statement when worn on its own.
Cedar is a versatile, mid-tone neutral green. It is a natural with Deep Teal, and sophisticated and timeless with Phlox or Orchid Hush.
Deep Teal, a strong, blue-toned green, suggests ocean depths and the color of the sky as daylight descends into darkness.
Rich, decadent Coffee Liqueúr brings a sense of elegance to fall, and is a savory alternative to basic black.
Nougat is tastefully embellished by Phlox, Emberglow or Honeysuckle.
Orchid Hush, a unique tone of gray with complex orchid undertones, blends well with any other color in the palette.
Quarry, a reliable medium gray, remains, as always, a practical, dependable staple.
(All looks from the fall 2011 Oscar de la Renta runway show!)

TIPS TO REMEMBER:
- You don't have to look like big bird to enjoy the lemon or bamboo color - mix only small accents of it with your neutrals like grey, black and white by using belts, shirts, pins, shoes or only one simple piece like a shirt.
- Everyone can wear a shade of red - YES YOU CAN! There is a tone out there that will work for your skin coloring, I promise. Don't miss out on this exquisite color.
- Burgundy is the epitomy of class and elegance.
- Your neutral shoes that you bought this spring - THEY ARE STILL IN.
- Black opaque panty hose are IN. YES I SAID IN. (The trick with hose is to make sure you aren't wearing 'suntan' if your face is white). Accent yourself in basic NUDES and shades of grey and black. For those women who aren't keen on showing your knees or legs for some reason - you are allowed to wear hose but be careful. You can immediately look OUT OF DATE if done incorrectly.

Oscar de la Renta Interview...This is a can't miss!
07/30/2011 -
Oscar de la Renta...and me!
As you can imagine, meeting one of my fashion icons would be an amazing event even if I only had the opportunity to shake his hand – so you can understand my excitement as I found myself alone with him, his beautiful step daughter, Eliza, who is the vice-president of the $250 million licensing department, and her husband, Alex Bolen, who is the company’s CEO.
I’m not one of those people who squeals around famous people – having worked in the music industry, I was able to meet and befriend someof the greats…and I can assure you, there was no squealing. Meeting Mr. de la Renta was a bit different though – his clothing and designs have always been a form of art that inspired me. I have consistently been drawn to his designs – if I am flipping through magazine and suddenly go ‘ooohhh,’ you can bet that I have paused to look at a de la Renta design. So truth be told, I was excited to be sitting with him, without any distractions and all the time in the world to ask him anything I wanted without any distractions. WOW. Below are a few of the highlights - maybe I will write a part II at a later date!
I hope this interview inspires you as much as it did me. I agree with Mr. de la Renta - Being a woman is our greatest asset in our personal life and in the workplace. We should celebrate our individuality and shine with confidence as we wear clothing that highlights the unique, beautiful women that God created us to be. If you have ever worked with me, you know that I LOVE color. The trick for professional women isn't that we can't wear or shouldn't invest in bright hues - we should make sure that the clothing has a professional, timeless 'cut,' so that we can show our personality with color but also make the statement that we are showing up to work. Professional wear is determined by the CUT of your clothing...The secret is that you can be feminine and powerful at the same time!
When I asked him about why he chose to create a line of clothing for Macy’s, he answered, “(I design for) a woman who cannot afford to buy the expensive clothes now, but perhaps one day will be able to.” He added, “Obviously, I try to create the same kind of clothes that I do for the expensive line. You know,I can only design clothes one way. That is always doing the best that I can to make a woman look her very best.” The Oscar de la Renta woman is defined as elegant and sophisticated, and the Macy's lineexemplifies this statement.
When I asked if he had any tips for the everyday woman – and by this I mean, not a celebrity…he quickly answered, “What is most important for a woman today is to express her own sense of individuality. I say this is the best time, EVER, to be a designer because there’s never been in history a woman who is more in control of her destiny as a woman is today. You know that a woman has a lot of choices.” He continues, “Obviously there is no loyalty among the consumertoday, because what is most important is a projection of her own sense of individuality and an expression of femininity. A woman knows today that even in the workplace to be a woman is a great asset.”
The purpose for the fashion show was to highlight his fall collection…which was truly exquisite. To choose which glamorous piece of clothing actually makes it to the runway, he tells me it is a process of working with his assistants in his design studio. The pieces that make it to the runway he feels are going to be the most commercial and will appeal to thebroadest group of women in the right price range. He adds, “The dress has to merit being on the runway.”
Is there a deciding factor of why one dress is chosen?
“A part of it fulfills and represents something that I feel is very important to be part of the picture whenI present the whole collection.” When I askif he has any favorites, he smiles and says, “I have no favorites, you know, I like them all. Probably I like the one that nobody likes because I feel sorry for the dress.” Running his business is truly a family affair. He continues, “It is wonderful because I see a continuation of the brand which is important. We are about building a brand and obviously having my family involved I know that it will continue and always be there.” Alex Bolen, worked in finance, founding and then selling an asset-management company before joining Bear Stearns. As the market stalled, Alex consulted part-time for De la Renta while the designer searched for a new CEO. “It took a very long time to convince Alex to work in the business. Eliza has been working with me now for a very long time – in the beginning she wanted to work in causes that had to do with the environment. Eventually they decided that this was their business.”
With this new collection, is there ever a fear that it won’t be as good as or better than your last one?
“There is always a fear – the day that you don’t have that fear then you should stop working. Every day is a learning process, everyday. People say, oh my goodness, you have been doing this for so many years, and you must have a sense of confidence with this collection. No, every time is more difficult because you demand more of yourself. Every time there are younger designers, new designers. Knowing that you have competition makes you try to excel and do your best.”
New designers – are they really competition for you?
“Any business is a competitive business.”
Are there any major challenges that have come with the growth of this empire? (Fragrances, home goods, the Macy’s line etc)
“Every day is a challenge. The exciting part is to accept the challenge and then try to conquer the challenge.”
As we drive through downtown Nashville he takes a moment to look at Tootsie’s sign that is flashing at us…a few moments later he turns to me again and I ask him if he enjoys Nashville. He grins and says, “Every time I come here it’s for a very short time, but to see downtown is exciting with all of the lights.”
Do you like country music?
“I love country music – in the beginning not as much because I didn’t understand it. My wife and I love Johnny Cash. I never really paid any attention to Johnny Cash until I saw Walk the Line. Now we are big fans.”
What do you do to relax and find peace?
“I move on to something else. I never stop moving. I’m involved in everything, so I take breaks by doing something different.” He tells me about a project he is working on in his beloved home of Punta Cana. He is invested in the Punta Cana Resort & Club as well as the large ecological reserve to go along with it. “My favorite place on earth is being with my family. I don’t like to be alone, I like to be surrounded by people and the most important thing to me is to be able to share time with my family. What I love most is really what I do on a daily basis which is to create clothes. I don’t look at it as work – I look at it as something that gives me tremendous pleasure.”
At the age of 18, he moved to Spain, where he studied painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He admits that his first love was painting and I wanted to know if he still enjoys picking up a brush. “I am very competitive…If I were to be a painter I would want to be very good. It is pleasurable, but I would not do it if I could not compete and be the best at it.”
Words you hope to pass down to continue your legacy?
“That I love the woman.”
Thank you Mr. de la Renta, we love you too.

Summer Fun: Good Manners and Proper Dress Never Go Out of Style
07/21/2011 -
I just love the summer months. There are picnics, company outings, poolside lounging and days in the park. What a great time to look your best and to enjoy the great outdoors. We need to review a few items that seem to slip everyone’s mind. First, let’s remember we are not at the beach, so dress appropriately. You can look great and still leave something to the imagination. Just recently, I attended an event and I wasn’t certain if one the ladies there was wearing a towel or a short dress. This image is NEVER the one that anyone wants to portray. Oh and one more reminder ladies…The old fashion idea of crossing your legs when you sit is still in style. There is nothing worse than sitting at the local ball game only to look in the stands and see a woman who forgot what she was wearing. If you want to get attention - trust me you will - but not the kind you would probably want.
Then, of course, there is the man who is wearing his son’s small t-shirt. I can appreciate a man who stays in shape just as much as the next person, but this new skin-tight look, regardless of how in shape you are, is not on anyone’s hot look list. Men - get shirts that fit you according to your body shape. If you buy the right shirt, it will hang slightly on your body, will help you stay cool and highlight your body shape. One more unsightly item that we all deal with is perspiration. Wearing the right colors can help shade the dreaded moisture display that we get when we sit out in the sun. Be aware of the weatherconditions when you are heading out for the afternoon in the warm sun. Fashion is about preparation just as much as it is about style. When it comes to presenting the best you, it is ok to take the extra time to prepare for your clothing for each day. If you’re a super sweater, then consider bringing a change of clothing and slip away at the right time and freshen up with a changed shirt or pants. This is true for men and women.
Now my last point is basic etiquette. What has happened to the old sayings "Do not chew your food with your mouth open,” or "Don’t talk while you’re eating," or "Use a napkin and not your shirt.” I do not care how great your outfit looks or how fit you are when it comes to your body and health. It only takes about 10 seconds of watching someone chew their food for all to see, or the dreaded let me talk and eat at the same time, to create a strong image that turns people off. Even at the most relaxed summer picnic, remember etiquette is always the same – including eating with your elbows on the table. Picnic table or dining table, same rule applies. Everyone can use a lesson and reminder about great manners from time to time.
Basics we can all remember:
1. Thank the host for having you and bring a gift for the host/hostess.
2. Only eat what you plan on finishing and do not go back for seconds until everyone has been served.
3. It’s just a meal. Please do not eat as if it is your last meal on earth. There will be more food when you get home so do not be a glutton. One plate should be enough.
4. Do not chew food with your mouth open or talk while your mouth is full.
5. Use the napkins; not shirts or table cloths.
6. Do not drink more than you should. A drunken guest is really no guest at all!
7. Clean up after you eat and offer to help when appropriate.
8. Do not stay later than the other guests unless your part of the cleanup crew. The hosts do not want to entertain you for hours on end after everyone else has left. Know when to leave.
Summer tends to be a more relaxed season and can be great fun between all of the outdoor parties and picnics and days at the ball parks. Remember, you are always presenting an image to the people around you. Make certain you are sharing the one that says the best about you. It takes just one bad image to change someone’s perception about your personal life and professional ability. Look great, have a wonderful time and remember; good manners and proper dress never go out of style!

Do I look trustworthy? Do I look detail oriented? Do you successfully project who you are and what your corporate brand is or what your clients expect you to be?
The last thing you want to do is create any doubt in your ability or the ability of the company because your image and fashion are saying something negative about you. Within mere seconds of seeing you, people have ...To continue reading, click here!

You're a Person, Not a Mannequin!
06/17/2011 -
"You’re a person; not a mannequin to be dressed up in the latest trends.
A "REAL" image consultant helps you determine who you are so that your style matches who you are – rather than you trying to match the stylists view of who you are."
Since being an image consultant is not your run of the mill profession, it can come with many questions. I’d love to answer some questions I receive regularly, but before we dive into those - I want to make sure we define the terms, Image and Fashion. Being fashionable is not the same as creating an Image or identifying your Brand. I know many people that believe wearing the fashionable and popular clothing lines is what matters – many times, money is spent on items that are supposed to be ‘fashionable,’ but end up looking cheap, ill-fitting and do not help to identify the person whatsoever. Fashion is only a part of creating a winning image and a personal and professional brand that accentuates who you are as a person and a professional. Image is about body language, mental confidence, proper fashion and that special attitude that says, “I know and love who I am.” I don’t think anyone would say that Oprah Winfrey was naturally gorgeous, but everyone would agree she has a brand and an image that say success! Fashion played a part in creating that brand, along with a positive attitude, hard work and a clear understanding of what she wanted to accomplish with her life. Those are the things that you must think about when creating your brand – BEFORE you invest in your ‘fashion’ you must know where you are going and be certain about the image you want to portray.
Is Fashion and Image simply about shopping and getting the right clothes?
This is a great question. I personally love to shop, but shopping is the last step in building a successful wardrobe and positive image. Many stylists will tell you that you need to SHOP and SHOP and SHOP, but what you need to do is determine who you are, what you want, and how you want to communicate your message. Only then can you begin to put together a cohesive image that YOU help to create – rather than trust someone else to create one for you which may not be what you would like it to be. I am blessed to work with so many wonderful people ranging from homemakers, amazing mothers, athletes, entertainers, large corporations, small business owners, top retailers and professionals in all fields. I can tell you from experience that there is no one size fits all answer for everyone as we are all different and unique.
Do I need a stylist, wardrobe consultant or an Image Consultant?
There are great things about stylists and those that look at your wardrobe that I truly enjoy, but an Image Consultant does more than simply assess your style and plays a completely different role. If you are having trouble with your personal passion for your life, you can be as styled up as you want and look like a movie star, but after the clothes wear off and the bills settle in, you will return to the same you. A "REAL" image consultant helps you determine who you are so that your style matches who you are – rather than you trying to match the stylists view of who you are. You’re a person; not a mannequin to be dressed up in the latest trends. Self worth and an understanding of how amazing you are is the key - everyone has insecurity issues, and a good Image Consultant helps you to address your fashion areas that can help you deal with human insecurities. When we know we look good, we reach out to the world, versus hide from it!
I am looking to jump start my Love Life, can an image consultant help?
While I am definitely not the love doctor, I can assure you that feeling great about yourself, presenting a winning image, and updating your wardrobe can be a spark that becomes a fire and will help you to enhance your opportunities of meeting the person of your dreams. There is NO DRESS CODE that can create a love relationship. It might make a lust relationship, but we all know that the lust relationship is one destined to fail! Love relationships are inviting and created by a sense of mystery and long term commitment – this is much more than how you look! You can shop and buy new clothes all over the world and still not turn a flicker into a roaring flame or a smile into a "Let’s get together again!"
Image can be an important component to reigniting the fire or finding the person of your dreams. Your image represents the real you - it’s not about looking sexy or handsome or about expensive cologne. Image is about the total package. My goal with each of my clients is to help bring added value to their romantic life! In order to love someone else you have to love yourself. I know many well dressed men and women who do not love themselves. As an image consultant we go beyond the surface. We are not trying to cover you up, but rather help others see and discover the real you! A love life starts off with ONE!!! You love who you are and what you stand for and then we can take WHO YOU ARE and create an image that matches your internal beauty and demeanor with the new outer image that reflects all God has made you to be!
Unemployed and outdated, Can you help?
Today’s job market is tough, and we live in a visual world. So let’s be honest…people start to form opinions about you before you say a word. After we meet, talk and discuss WHO you are, only then can we match that to your clothes, image and career you are seeking. Creative careers and technical careers have a certain look that says I am detailed, energetic, up to date and a trend setter. While a financial job search may highlight a more traditional look, somewhat conservative but still current…this would not be a wardrobe that is bright with purples and rich reds in large amounts. I have had the privilege of helping large companies and business owners create dress codes and proper fashion for work and casual days.
As your image consultant, I can take what I have learned in business, from business and with business in order to help you match your career goals with the right image. Regardless, please note you always want to look your best for any interview. Success begins long before you have the chance to shake someone’s hand or say a word. Give yourself the best chance for success; say the right things with the image you present!
I know some great image consultants that are also incredible stylists and wardrobe consultants - I have yet to meet some great stylists that are also experienced image consultants. Each profession has its role and purpose. Please let me know if I can serve you or anyone you may know. My success is based on one thing - Your satisfaction with the services that I provide.
Warmest Regards,
Mila

Special Edition Father's Day Newsletter!
06/09/2011 -

Father’s Day…Some would say this is one of the most overlooked holidays of the year – and others believe that it is one of the oldest holidays on record as Moses wrote the God inspired words in Exodus when he penned, HONOR YOUR FATHER. So with this in mind, allow me to share a few thoughts on this important day and a few ideas that will help make this Father's Day a day that excites Dad and celebrates all the Fathers everywhere.
Some are single, some are married, some are close and some are far away, some travel and some work from home, but no matter where your Dad is, HE IS SO IMPORTANT. In the best case scenario, the Dad is the leader of the home, the mentor for his children and the example for others to follow. He is one important ingredient that every child needs and every home deserves. Dad is always DAD, no matter where we are or what we need. For me, Dad was an amazing Grandfather - for others, he is a stepdad, for some he has always been Dad, and for those whose Dad has gone astray, he is a hope for a reunion. The great news is, no matter WHO you call dad, he is important!!! So let’s make Father’s Day a day of celebration for the Father in your life.
Here are some great Dad’s day gifts!
-
Sunglasses – great for year round use! Try aviators first – they tend to complement many face shapes, never go out of style and always say chic.
-
Cologne – if dad has been wearing the same cologne for years, it’s time for a change.
-
Leather wallet – each time he pulls it out of his pocket, he will think of you!
-
A great watch (Engrave the back for a personal touch)…this truly can be a gift that lasts a lifetime
Ticket to his favorite sporting event – FOR THE TWO OF YOU!
Bocce ball or croquet set – Unique and something you can do together in the backyard on a balmy summer evening.

Buy a frame with a large mat around the picture area – write a note on the mat itself and tell him how much you love him! Frame a picture of the two of you when you were really little if possible.
-
Nothing is better than the gift of time and a hug…spend the day with your dad if you can or plan a trip to visit him and give him the dates so he has something to look forward to.
- Of course, there nothing better than the painted plaster that says I LOVE YOU and has two, three or maybe even four handprints caste in the plaster. Dad's act tough but they love heartfelt gifts, so start with a card and tell Dad you love him and how important he is.
Another great gift for dad would be a gift certificate from MODA! We can help you boost dad’s look, improve his wardrobe and update his style! Truly a gift that lasts a lifetime – we have great gift certificates, gift bags and a special fashion gift just for dad when you purchase a gift certificate – makes it easy! Let’s plan a special day for your dad or special man in your life together. Call or email today for more information!

May 2011 Newsletter - My summer favorites...
05/10/2011 -

Summer Fashion Essentials...
I am often asked what some of my ‘favorites’ are for every season and I am careful to respond as they might not work for everyone…but this season, I am loving the fashions and I wanted to share a few of my personal summer essentials. I would love to help you with all of your image and fashion needs…From fashion to make-up and hair help, I can point you in the right direction according to your personal and professional goals as well as needs. You will save oodles of money and precious time when you know what your brand is, what lines work best for your body and how to shop your closet. Please call or email today to set up a complimentary consultation!
Let's start with shoes! Regardless of what I am wearing or what event I am attending, I choose a pair of shoes that have something special...this season, the choices are endless. As many of you already know I have a 16 month old little girl - this means, days at the park chasing her around in the sandbox, pushing her in her pink princess cozy coupe, days at the zoo and playdates galore - as a mom I want to look chic, but comfort is my first goal...Here are a few of my choices for my 'mom' days...or grocery store shopping trips, errand running etc - you get the picture! Embellished sandals are all the rage this season and I love them - stones, braids, bright colors and metallics; you can't go wrong. Even if you are simply wearing a white (hopefully fitted) t-shirt and a pair of shorts, a beautiful embellished sandal will make you look and feel like a fashionista!
One of my new favorite brands is Isola seen below. (Found exclusively at the Cool Springs Dillard's. They are made by Sofft - these amazingly comfortable shoes are as fashion forward as it gets...from flats to heels, they are worth a try!)

Sunglasses are my next essential - find a pair that fits your face. A great pair of glasses is a worthy investment - they are something you wear every single day and you will get your money's worth out of them! I personally love the always in style aviator for my face shape...Take some time to play around with different shapes - invest in a neutral that will take you from casual to sophisticated. (Chanel glasses on the left are available at Nordstrom.com)
My next staple is a fabulous summer tote...Mine is big enough to make even Mary Poppins proud, but a mid-size tote is a great investment...I always invest in neutrals as they will last from season to season and go with absolutely anything. All of the beautiful bags below are available at Nordstrom.com!

OK, back to shoes...Wedges are definitely in and are more comfortable than you may think! The platform underneath the ball of your foot gives you a bit of a lift and makes the heel not so tall. One of the best advantages of a wedge, they give a bit of boost (You know what I mean ladies) and they look great with capris, shorts, dresses and skirts! (All option below are available at Dillards.com).
One of the most daunting aspects of summer is the bathing suit...can I get an AMEN?! So, I will forgo the bathing suit advice for today and go with something we all need...the coverup! Whether I am hanging with my teenage girls or chasing Sophia around in her Huggies swimmers...I am wearing a coverup...I LOVE the one below by Trina Turk, and if you live in my neighborhood - you will see it quite a bit this summer...Go with fun, bright colors! If you feel more comfortable wearing a more demure pattern for the actual bathing suit, pick a cover up that says fun, sexy and comfortable - yes, it is possible to get all three! Here are a few of my choices available at Nordstrom.com.

If you would like to spice up your summer wardrobe whether for work and/or personal needs, I would absolutely LOVE to help you! Call or e-mail today to set up a complimentary consultation to see what we might be able to do together! I look forward to hearing from you soon!
Happy Shopping!

April 2011 Newsletter - Your Temple, Your Image and Fashion...

Your Temple, Your Image and Fashion...
I think every client I have -male or female, starts off with one question…What can you do for me? The most interesting part of my work is helping clients define WHO they are and what they want to say about themselves. The real TRUTH in life is about knowing why you were created and from who do we get our desire to live. Fashion and looking great are all extensions from those two points. Those truths determine the direction for your life and your look. I believe fashion and defining your "Personal Brand" are more than an expression of yourself…I have seen time and time again the changes that fashion can create in a person as a resurrection, not an evolution.
We are bringing the real you back to life and getting rid of the old you that got lost in a busy schedule, work and years of neglect. Our body is a temple and we have the free will to decide who resides in our temple and how we will treat our temple. Clothing and fashion is the adornment of your temple and fashion really defines and tells the world how you feel about yourself.
Professionally, I think your temple, your body and your fashion, should provide an expression that is exciting, inviting, intelligent and says you care about yourself. Clothing alone cannot turn your fashion into a positive statement about you without first making certain your temple, the body, is feeling wonderful.
Every now and then we need to purge this temple of ours; we need to exercise and diet, to drink juices and water, to cleanse the inside before we start to decorate the outside. When it comes to fashion, your look is determined by ALL OF YOU, not just the clothes you wear. Your social and emotional well being is a part of fashion, your mental attitude and aptitude is part of fashion and your physical health is a part of your fashion. All of these areas are a part of the temple and deal with the inside as much as the outside. Fashion and image can boost the feelings you have on the inside…so when we get the right look, the right fit and the right fashion we are half way there to resurrecting the YOU that you have always been. Blessed and created for a purpose!
Start with a smile, start with plenty of rest, start with a positive outlook and start with a goal that will improve your complete life - not just how you look. Once we have helped establish all of these points, then we are ready to take your temple and dress it up.
So this spring, think about some personal spring cleaning. Let's start on the inside and work towards the outside…then we can finish up our time redoing your closets and refocusing you on your personal and professional goals. Then we can celebrate a new you that shines from the inside out. We can bring color, joy, excitement and a new energy to your life!!!
So allow me to leave you with this question…who resides in your temple? What do you want to say about YOU and what is important in your life? Fashion is an expression of one’s thoughts, values and goals, and I hope I can help you turn your closet and your image into your personal work of art that says, "Here I am, I believe in myself, I value my temple and I am ready to make a difference in this world!"
May God bless you this spring and I look forward to hearing from you!

March 2011 Newsletter - Do you have any skeletons in your closet?
03/09/2011 -

We have all heard this infamous saying, “Everyone has at least some skeletons in their closet.” As an image, wardrobe and fashion consultant, I can tell you that this statement is OH SO TRUE. When you think about "skeletons in the closet," most people think about secrets – It doesn’t matter whether these secrets are lies, mistakes or past sins – they are hidden away behind closed doors where we do not want anyone to know they exist. Reality is that we all have SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET. I find that those skeletons can take shape and form in the articles of clothing we have or the jewels and accessories we hold on to. They are not always about bad relationships, but can be more about the pains of life and the wrong images we take on about our bodies and this worldly beauty!
For instance, I have been in closets working with clients to create a new image and to bring their personal fashion up to date and I will hear, "I can’t get rid of that, it is my favorite dress from when I was younger," or "I love those pants,” when in reality they no longer really fit and should simply be passed along to the trash pile. Why do we hold on to some of our clothes? Many of them can be OUR SKELETONS in the closet. We keep jewelry or clothing from an old flame when we are no longer dating them or we are actually married to someone else. They become our secret reminders of a past emotional relationship. Such skeletons can only lead to improper comparisons or a less than fully committed heart to the one we are with. We see the clothes and we tend to only remember the good parts of the past.
What about clothes that no longer fit, yet we hold on to them promising ourselves that SOME DAY we will wear them again. Actually, these clothes are only a reminder that we do not look the way WE THINK we should look. They do not motivate us to change our diets or begin exercise programs, but rather, like a skeleton, they hang there and say HERE I AM, ONE DAY YOU WILL BE ABLE TO USE ME AGAIN WHEN YOU LOOK BETTER. Visual reminders that say you’re not good enough, or let’s keep these while we forget that we need to actually act in order to create change. This is very rarely a ‘good’ thing. How can we change when we allow the skeletons of our past fashions to lull us to sleep?
Then there is the skeleton I call the “I AM A VICTIM” skeleton. These are from broken relationships or gifts from someone who hurt you in life. Why do we keep old reminders around us if they only remind us of past relationships and emotional trauma? My advice is to get rid of them. Do not keep the clothes that were a gift from an ex or a scarf that was given on a special day with Mr. or Mrs. Right who turned out to be MR or MRS wrong.
Yes, we definitely have skeletons in our closets. What is the answer? It’s quite simple; we should open the doors and throw them out. Get rid of the clothes from the past, eliminate yesterdays fashions and sizes that only visibly criticize you today…Donate the jewels or gifts from broken relationships and eliminate the skeletons from your closet. Fashion is what you use to paint a picture of yourself to the world every day. We all know that great pictures create positive and encouraging thoughts…your fashion and image are not different. We know that our look will create a response, good or bad, just like art creates a response. My goal is to help you to create the response that you want. Don’t leave it up to everyone else to decide what they see – direct them to a positive picture! I help clients create the best visual image for their personal style, professional brand and inner beauty by painting pictures they love to look at themselves.
What Skeletons do you have hanging in your closet? Are there some that we need to throw or give away? Are there some that are still holding you back and call your name every time you walk in the closet? If you are like many clients I have worked with, the answer to those questions is a YES. Decide today that you are going to get rid of the skeletons in your closet and find someone that is a professional at burying them!!!! There are some skeletons in our closets that are beyond our control, but when it comes to fashion and image, YOU CONTROL WHAT HANGS IN YOUR CLOSET! Decide to make your closet an area of celebration, renewal and rest!
If you have a few skeletons in your closet you would like to eliminate, please call me…together we will bring them out into the open and destroy them. I enjoy bringing light into the dark closets of my clients, family and friends!!!

February 2011 Newsletter - Transformation or Metamorphosis?
02/22/2011 -
Transformation or Metamorphosis-- Spring is coming, are you ready?
We are headed into the spring season and our minds are already thinking of warmer days, beautiful flowers and for many of us, “A NEW ME." We have been wrapped up in our cocoons of comfort doing all we can to stay warm while we weather the cold days and snowy nights. I personally compare this time of year to the butterfly. It started out as a caterpillar and prepared for a NEW SEASON. Building a safe and warm cocoon all around itself, then as the itch of spring begins and the days begin to thaw, it has a desire to push out into the warmth and reveal its new wings and bright colors.
For some, this is a minor transformation with a few additional updates to our wardrobe, a few more highlights in our hair and a new pair of neutral shoes (So 'in' this season). For others, we joined gyms this winter and started to reshape our bodies and inspire our minds - and the process is more of a metamorphosis. This is defined by a marked change in appearance that others around us will notice. We change from one look in the winter, reinvent ourselves and reveal our new look in the spring. No matter which one it is for you, image and fashion play a major role in turning the cold grey days of winter into the bright colors and breeze of spring. I have chosen a few pieces that will help you look gorgeous this spring – and definitely help you to stand out! I would love to help you simply transform a few things or be a part of a larger metamorphosis this spring!
Set the standard and show off your personality with clothing pieces that standout but are still wearable each day. And remember, fashion is an attitude...decide to start fresh every morning by getting up and getting ready. It is always a perfect time to start updating your image on the outside in order to better represent who you are on the inside! Call or email today to set up a time for a complimentary consultation.
A great reflection in the mirror does a lot to determine how you feel throughout the day!
Warmest,
Mila

Even a simple black and white checkered shirt (Picture above, available at Nordstrom.com) can have some 'fashion' elements to it. A bow, a unique ruffle, a gorgeous neckline...Buy unique pieces that say something about YOU and YOUR PERSONALITY. A simple shell underneath a suit jacket isn't always enough - when purchasing a piece of clothing ask yourself these questions...
1 - Does it say something about my personality?
2- Is it unique?
3- Does it go with at LEAST 3 other pieces in my wardrobe?
4- Does this item compliment my personal and professioanal brand?
If you answer 'no' to any of those questions, put it back. The military look has been in for a while, and some of the pieces were just beautiful! If I didn't know my personal brand I would have bought one last season because of the immense cuteness, but I wouldn't have ever worn it. It wasn't 'me,' didn't define my personality and was not a good addition to my current wardrobe...it is easy to get sucked in by cuteness and sales. KNOW YOUR BRAND and save yourself some money!

I have always said that a great bag is a worthy investment. Regardless of what you are wearing, your bag will make or break your outfit. Buy a timeless style that accentuates your body shape - and can be dressed up or down...don't feel guilty spending money on a great bag if it's the right one!
Diane von Furstenberg Kelli Woven-Panel Hobo; Neimanmarcus.com

It's hard to top the easy, glamorous, chic look of a sheath dress...Wear it anywhere; dress it up or down and make life easy - sandals or pumps and you look beautiful!
Silk silent clusters print dress; Anntaylor.com
PS: If you have worked with me, you know that I am not one to focus on trends...but since I love neutrals and think they are necessary in anyone's wardrobe, let's talk neutrals! This season you should definitely include a neutral pump/heel into your wardrobe...patent leather, peep toe, sling back or cloth works - just make it a neutral!

White jeans! Anyone can wear white jeans if they are the right fit...This can sass up any outfit...wear with flats or heels!

January 2011 Newsletter - The Year "TO BE!"
01/13/2011 -
January is here, and I know that most of us are welcoming 2011! Last year was a challenging year for many of us, but a year where our personal resolve to overcome difficulties and challenges is now behind us and we are stronger for it. My prayer is that America seeks to return to the basic truths that make our country THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD. We can all have different backgrounds, faiths and goals…but what makes this melting pot of diversity work is our nationwide commitment to truth, honesty and our God given right to be free!
The cold winds of winter will soon lead to the beauty of spring and the warmth of summer. Do not let the cold days of winter determine your attitude and outlook for 2011. Enjoy each God given day you have been given and seek to reach your personal and professional goals with a new zeal for life and passion for excellence. MODA Image Consulting is focused on helping you reach new professional and personal goals at work, at home and in your relationships. I work in the fashion and image industry; an industry that thrives on how you look and how you want others to look at you. Here is a basic truth I have learned - clothing will not cure, nor will fashion fix issues of the heart, soul and mind. If you want to make 2011 the best year it can be for you, then begin with a personal self inspection and seek the "real you" that is on the inside. True victory begins when we understand that none of us are perfect and we all have room for personal improvement.
Personally, I love helping people discover how to share WHO THEY ARE with the world around them. I enjoy turning the inside person into an outside reflection that represents all they are and want to be. This includes personal branding, professional branding and updating your look to reflect the changes that have taken place in your life.
You can set your mood each day by what you wear. Choosing colors that excite you, fashion that highlights you and design that delights you is the key! Make 2011 the year you plan “TO BE.”
* To be an example for others by looking your best
*To be a visual burst of energy
* To be excited to get started each day in your closet
*To be empowered because you are unique
*To be confident on the inside and reflect that on the outside
*To be in control of how others see you
*To be a creator of your image! (Do not let others create one for you).
*To be determined and know that it is ok to stand out in the crowd
*TO BE YOU
Sign up for my e-mail program to receive articles and tips that I guarantee will provide added value to your life. Let us get together and turn your 2011 into all you want the year "TO BE!" I would love to help you in any way I can!

My closet basics for 2011 are below...These are a few basics that 'most' closets should have! (More basics in my next newsletter!)
A white button down shirt:
My new favorite is called, The Shirt by Rochelle Behrens
I saw her on the Today Show and I was sold. This is from Rochelle's website, www.theshirt.com. "This white shirt will keep you looking crisp and feeling confident in any weather, thanks to its anti-pucker technology. "When you're looking for a white shirt, many times it doesn't fit across your bust and you're popping out," he says. "It has dual buttons right there in the spots where you need dual buttons."
At $80, The Shirt by Rochelle Behrens comes in five different colors. "It is for all-busted women," he says. "Now you don't have to put tape or safety pins and all this stuff that doesn't work."
Black Pencil Skirt
This figure-flattering skirt can be paired with countless items in your closet to create an instantly polished look. This is a seasonless piece that can be worn with beautiful sweaters in the colder months and a silk top and jacket or cardigan in the warmer months. Skirt length should be right above the knee or right below.
*Fashion don't: Do not pair this with a sweater that has a hood. Some items of clothing are 'confused' and if they could speak they would tell you they have no idea what they are for. A pretty sweater wtih a hood should not be worn with a skirt and heels. (This skirt is from Macys.com; Calvin Klein Skirt, Studded Pencil)
3. Dark wash jeans. This is an essential. Jeans should come almost to the floor regardless of the shoe you are wearing. Use hem tape for your flats, but do not get shorter jeans for shorter shoes and try to wear them with heels! A great dark wash without any white patches, whiskers or rips are a classic pair that everyone needs.
Donna Karan "Soho" Bootcut jean from Dillards.com.
Shapewear: TC Fine Shapewear
We all need a little bit of shaping and smoothing every once in a while. This is one of my favorite products on the market for this very thing! This piece shapes and mildly 'sucks in,' but it doesn't squish the chest area. Remember when trying it on you need to step into it and then pull it up. A bit tricky but worth it!

Retailers up the ante with fashion shows, wine, food

Mila Grigg, president of Moda Image Consulting, speaks to shoppers during an after-hours event at the Dillards at CoolSprings Galleria this fall.
Shopping is often little more than an impersonal transaction. Some retailers, however, are catering to their customers with music, wine and advice.
With a goal of building stronger relationships with customers, retailers are using in-store events to draw in more shoppers and more sales amid an extremely competitive retail scene.
Events can help increase sales and reinforce a retailers brand, but they also offer lessons for other businesses. Even if you deal with clients, events can be a way to share new products or services, show gratitude or lure those wary of high-pressure sales tactics.
Ladies night out
Mila Grigg, president of Moda Image Consulting, convinced the managers of the Dillards at CoolSprings Galleria to allow Grigg and 150 of her clients and invited guests to have free rein of the store, and to pay her for the privilege.
After walking in on a red carpet, guests, attending for free, heard Grigg speak about her favorite clothing items in the store. Shoppers were then allowed to explore for two hours, getting advice from Grigg on whether items worked for their figures.
In two hours, Grigg estimates those 150 customers spent $30,000 on merchandise. Having a third party endorse an outfit, she said, made it easier to plunk down cash.
Brant Musgrave, a Dillards district manager, said allowing Grigg to host an event was an easy call, as it allowed the department store to reinforce its brand as customer friendly and fashion forward. Lacking the coast-to-coast presence of some retailers, events help Dillards stand out and connect with its customers.
Wine and cheese
Brett Corrieri, proprietor of Corrieris Formaggeria and Vinea Wine & Spirits and a corporate chef at Mafiozas, all in the 12 South neighborhood, was frustrated that his wine-store customers didnt know about his cheese shop located directly behind it and vice versa.
To get some cross pollination, Corrieri began hosting free wine tastings outside of the cheese shop during warm months. During the colder months, he charges for wine tastings inside Mafiozas.
The events help promote all three entities, and at a better bang-for-the-buck compared to traditional advertising, Corrieri said. He said the events, particularly the free tastings, also serve as a thank you to the neighborhood, where many customers stroll from their homes to the shops.
The events are of the soft-sell variety: a list of the wines and their prices is displayed. If a guest shows an interest in the wine and has questions, staff from the wine store helps him or her learn more. If guests just want to sip chardonnay while talking with their friends, theyre left alone.
This is a key aspect of hosting a successful retail event: Customers dont want to feel like an event is just being held to sell them stuff, said Lynni Megginson, a Washington, D.C.-based retailer-turned-interior designer and author of The Absolute Guide to Planning Fabulous Retail Events. Event guests, she said, want to feel comfortable, almost like theyre at someones home.
Britt Beemer, founder of South Carolina-based Americas Research Group, said the main keys to any successful retail event should be kept in mind by any business, even those not in retail.
People always love to be the first to see new things, Beemer said. And events, retail or otherwise, should be fun. Fun and new still works, every time, he said.
Planning your event
Hosting an in-store event is a powerful tool for retailers to increase and connect with their customers. They also, however, place the retailers name and reputation on the line, even if the event is being thrown by an invited guest such as a fashion coach.
Be discriminating. Many events are based around a vendor doing an in-store demonstration. Be cautious in choosing whom you allow to do this. Theyre either going to make you look silly, or theyre going to make you look fantastic, said Brant Musgrave, a district manager for Dillards.
Repercussions from a failed event can be permanent. If things dont go well, the consumer will never give you a second chance, said Britt Beemer, a South Carolina retail consultant.
Offer a discount. Even the high-end customer expects something for their time, Beemer said. Discounts not only bring customers to a store, but they help bring them back. Consider leaving your guests with a discount offer for a return visit.
Timing is everything. Lynni Megginson, a Washington, D.C.-based interior designer, held her home-decor stores events on Thursdays. This allowed her customers, mainly mothers, to talk about their experience at the Friday school pick-up lane or at the weekend country club. Event customers, Megginson said, become your own little team of ambassadors.
But beware of your surroundings. Before scheduling one event, Megginson neglected to check the school calendar. Turned out that Thursday was part of a long break.

(Clothes above available at Nordstrom.com)
Coats: Go with a color or subtle embellishment to add a bit of fun in your day...Whatever you do, don't opt for boring! (Coats below available at Macys.com)
Sweaters: Same advice when it comes to boring...even on those days at home or running errands it is just as easy to throw on something cute rather than bulky or frumpy...(NO SWEATSHIRTS PLEASE!)
Easy day sweaters: Available at Nordstrom.com.

Accessories: These can make or break an outfit...choose colorful, embellished and different. Even if the rest of your outfit is ordinary, a great accessory can take you from blah to beautiful! (Available at Dillards.com)
Patterned Tights: When you throw on an easy (and chic) sweaterdress or are wearing a skirt - choose a pair of tights with some personality...this can mean color or pattern. Here are a few of my favorites! (Spanx brand tights are not only cute but will shape and define!) Tights below available at Dillards.com.
