Yesterday’s Successes are Tomorrow’s Tarnished Trophies
Have you ever met the salesperson or athlete who always remembers the big sale, the super year, that amazing season, or the year that the company Brand really took off? We love our trophies, but the problem is that we can get caught looking at them too much and not striving after new successes. I can remember the Wendy’s commercial, Where’s the Beef,’ and the dominant days of Dell Computer, or the Life cereal commercial, Mikey likes it!’ These giant marketing triumphs helped to create brands that we can remember, yet today, Life cereal is no longer filling every cereal bowl and Wendy’s is third in the burger wars.
Have you ever caught yourself looking at the past trophies of your life or business and failed to stay up to date? Do you find yourself thinking or even saying, I remember when…’ Success is fleeting and it can lead to stagnation. Take a moment to reflect. Are you still excited? Motivated? Seeking after new dreams and ambitions? How about work – Is your career stuck in the mud? Is your company brand improving or is the business playing the starring role in the movie Groundhog Day?
Trophies tarnish and so do past successes. Great brands are always re-evaluating themselves. This is true for one’s Personal and Professional Brand and for a company’s Corporate Brand. Personal, Professional or Corporate Brands that drift are brands that are losing their influence and visibility. Trophies are exciting and you should celebrate your victories, but remember, today’s silver trophy is tarnished by time.
The best Brands are the ones that constantly evaluate and then update. This saying is true when it comes to Brand…That was yesterday, what have you done for me lately?
