Building a personal brand is so important for business, but building a personal brand to ensure the right legacy is even more important.

What do you want people to say at your funeral? What is the legacy that you leave every single day at work, at home, in the community?
Building your personal brand allows you to share your value, communicate a message, make more money even, but at the end of the day what matters the most is how you made people feel and the legacy that they remember.

At a recent funeral for a friend, I was absolutely in awe at the Legacy that she left behind. She lead with love, grace and humility. She touched thousands of people at work, at home and in her entire life. It really did make me take pause to ask myself if I’m leaving the right legacy for my family and for my colleagues.

An exercise we have had clients do in the past – especially our clients who have reached a level of success that creates much less time for them, is to write their own eulogy. It sounds slightly morbid, but it truly does refocus your energy and your plan for not only how you live your life every day but what you do and the goals that you’re trying to achieve. Take the time to really know if the goals that you were trying to achieve matter in the end, really matter.
What I learned from my friend is that the end of your life isn’t about the success or the wealth, but it is truly about the love that you have for your family, your children and those that you’re humbled and blessed enough to lead.
