Getting Dressed with Mila Grigg, Harrison Ford and Ellen Kullman (CEO, DuPont)|
“Look and learn boys, because this is what cool is…
How in one generation have men gone from guys like Harrison Ford and Jack Nicholson to …?”
The Intern is a new movie starring Anne Hathaway and Robert DeNiro…Can’t wait to see it. The trailer caught my attention with one line, “Look and learn boys, because this is what cool is…
How in one generation have men gone from guys like Harrison Ford and Jack Nicholson to …?” (She was speaking to the guys in the picture on the left).
There was an era in time when people invested in themselves; and you should too. See the entire trailer here.
Whether I am working with an individual client, or training groups of people on personal brand, corporate brand, fashion and image, I often hear these comments.
- People should appreciate me for my talents.
- I am too smart to care about my image.
- If they can’t appreciate what I have to offer because of my image or fashion choices, they are judgmental.
- Fashion is not important.
- As long as I do a great job, it really doesn’t matter what I wear.
A few thoughts:
- Intelligence is seen, heard and read. First, it is seen.
- Lazy is not fashionable,
- T-shirts say I don’t care.’
- You may be passed by for a new position or a promotion because your shirt is telling people you are sloppy and unaware of your environment.
I work with people at all levels and in many professions. I can’t express strongly enough how much your image matters. I meet people who are brilliant, unappreciated and struggling to reach their goals because their image tells the world that they don’t want to succeed. Your clothing speaks, your lack of grooming speaks, your dirty nails share a message and your flip flops are simply inappropriate.
First impressions are made in a ¼ of a second…trust is discerned within that time. Did you have time to give someone your resume? Share with them your past successes? Share your brilliant ideas? No. In ¼ of a second, your image is sharing all of those things with everyone you meet. Make the most of it.
Sometimes I hear, I know brilliant people who are doing incredible things and they are the least fashionable.’ That is wonderful, but could they be doing better? Are they at the pinnacle of their career and reaching all of their goals? Are they happy personally? Do they feel good about themselves? Do they have a social life that they enjoy? Good enough becomes bad when it takes away from being great. Are your goals really to be good enough?’
I meet people who are doing well’ in business and are lonely…if you look good, you feel good. If you feel good, you produce greater results and are more likely to make the call you have been putting off and walking up to the person you have been intent on meeting.
Image and fashion are not about beauty…You are perfectly created. If I said to you I could make you prettier or more handsome, fire me. Our creator made you in His image and I only want to help you to be the best you that you can be. Reach your goals. Discover your talents. Communicate who you are to the world and don’t miss opportunities because an image or fashion choice tells people a lie about you.
Let’s take a cue from some incredible CEO’s…Click here to read this CNBC column, “America’s Best Dressed CEO’s.” Pictured here is Ellen Kullman, CEO of DuPont.
A few fashion tips if you are a professional of any kind:
- Wear a watch.
- Get your shoes polished.
- Men your shirt needs to fit without extra material around your waist and sleeves.
- Women use color and pattern to reveal your personality.
- Groom: No roots and pay attention to neck, face, ear and nose hair. Nobody wants to talk to someone with a tree growing out of their nose.
