Fashion and Family
I am often asked how I find the time to do all that I do and still keep up on my family and personal obligations. The answer is easy for me because what I do is a part of who I am. I love what I do and do what I love; which I believe is one of the keys to success in life. Let me explain what I mean and hopefully I can help you turn your ‘fashion’ into more than clothes in the closet.
My values are simple. Faith first, then family and then my career… My career as an Image Consultant and expert on fashion allows me utilize what I know in all of the important areas of my life. There are some timeless qualities in life that are reflected by image and fashion. This is true for my faith in God, my love for my family and how I enjoy my career in the crazy world of fashion. I believe these qualities are that you have to love yourself before you can love others – You must invest in yourself, God defines who you are and fashion is the wrapping that shows others what you believe – It’s what is inside you that is of greatest value; how you dress (the wrapping) is how you show the world that you love yourself as a person, you respect others and that you reflect what you believe in how you look.
Faith for instance – I dress accordingly, always looking my best and giving my faith the respect it deserves by preparing what I wear for the service I attend. It’s my belief that how I dress on the outside should reflect what I believe to be true on the inside. How you look and the time you take to look your best says, I care about others and they deserve my best – whether this is your boss at work, your children, your husband or wife or your friends. This is not a fashion show; it’s about looking your best according to who you are and what you believe!
My family – as you can see I am surrounded by some beautiful girls! With daughters running from 10 months to 18 years old – I believe it is important to show my girls that ‘fashion’ tells a story of who you are and what you believe and it is important to not get caught in trends or fashions that might say something negative. Fashion trends and fads are not as important as we think, and it is vital to not give into peer pressure and to try to look like everyone else. I tell them to let their fashion be an expression of how they feel about themselves. Dress properly, be unique, don’t be a part of the pack but rather set your own path. I show them that elegance is more important than fitting in with the latest trend (think too short shorts, midriff baring shirts etc), and that quality is always better than quantity. My girls understand how fashion should work FOR you – not AGAINST you, and helps you share who you are on the inside by sending out the right messages. They have learned that quality clothing is worth saving for. They know that we must budget for the clothes we buy and when we wait on the right clothing we learn something about fighting instant gratification. Fashion is not about fitting in; it’s about looking your best so you can set an example for others. Trashy is never cool. They know they can look their best, learn something about quality and appreciate the idea of saving for the special things they want.
Finally work. I truly love what I do! My goal is to always help women and men understand how fashion is a tool for success and can be a pleasure versus a chore or something we don’t look forward to. Everyone loves to look good because we feel a sense of confidence when our clothes fit and our outside reflects the intelligence and personality of the inside. My family understands that when you work for someone or for yourself, it is important that your look says what you want it to say. It’s communicating without saying a word and it is a message that we can control! Isn’t this true in every area I have written about. How you dress – the fashion that you follow, is always sending out messages. It’s telling your friends what kind of mood you’re in, it’s telling people at work what kind of job they can expect, and most importantly, it’s showing the world that you love the life you have been given and that you respect yourself enough to make certain that what you wear fits not only your body shape but who you are and what you believe!
