Dressing for Success in the heat!
"IF YOU DON'T ACTIVELY MANAGE YOUR PROFESSIONAL IMAGE - OTHERS WILL DO IT FOR YOU."
Dear Friends,
I hope this newsletter finds you doing wonderfully and enjoying summer! I borrowed the above quote from Harvard Business School professor Laura Morgan Roberts. She goes on to say, "People are constantly observing your behavior and forming theories about your competence, character, and commitment, which are rapidly disseminated throughout your workplace. It is only wise to add your voice in framing others' theories about who you are and what you can accomplish." Regardless of how accomplished you may be, people's perceptions begin with your image - and your image will dictate whether or not people believe you are skilled!
I have always viewed the idea of creating a professional polished image as a necessity – not a luxury. You cannot afford to allow other people’s perceptions of you to dictate where you will go professionally…or personally. Unfortunately, many people are plagued by an image that devalues their skills, abilities and intelligence – image done incorrectly will create the proverbial glass ceiling that will keep you from moving ahead regardless of how good you are at your job or even if you deserve to move forward. Companies not only hire me to present seminars on image - I am also hired to help specific employees upgrade/improve their image in order to move upward in the company and in their careers. Regrettably, not all companies have the ability to upgrade the image of each employee that has great potential – I have worked with numerous corporations who have told me that certain employees will be let go if they do not hear and then implement what I have taught in a seminar.
Creating a professional image that works FOR you, not AGAINST you is a necessity – I think you will agree with Professor Roberts in her assessment on the importance of taking a proactive approach in how others perceive you based solely on your image.
If you would like to have a wardrobe assessment, update/improve your wardrobe, change your image, establish your personal style and solidify your brand, or talk about how I can help your organization or business with a 'Dress for Success' or 'Professional Image' seminar – please contact me for a complimentary consultation. I’d love to grab a cup of coffee with you.
Warmest Regards,
Mila

- Are you confused about dress code policies and how you should be dressing at work?
- Are you unsure of the best way to dress in your particular work environment?
So how can you be professional in the summer heat?
I have had quite a few emails in the past weeks asking me for advice on being professional in the summer heat – understandably, this is a tough thing to do but there is hope! When the heat gets up to over 80 degrees, and the humidity is high, traditional business dress can really be a drag.
Wardrobe is an increasingly important factor in determining whether or not you’re going to get ahead, according to a survey from Yahoo! Hot Jobs. Eighty-two percent of human resources professionals believe that the way you dress affects your place at work, according to the survey. After having given numerous seminars to companies and firms on professional business attire and dressing for success, I have had the opportunity to hear the complaints employers have (and there are many) when it comes to professional summer fashion – I want to share with you the ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’ of what to wear and how to stay cool at the same time.
The key to remember is that having a closet full of clothes is less important than acquiring a few versatile key items that can be matched with simpler, plainer items to create an overall look of class and style.
Dresses: A fabulous option in the summer. There are thousands of options that come with little jackets that can match the dress or not! Below is a perfect example of what we can do to keep the professional look and cover our arms while not overheating. If you can't stand the heat (and depending on your office environment) - don't wear the jacket until you really need to!
Try to stay away from floral prints, bold prints and bright colors. If you are wearing a dress that isn't as traditional as you would like, throw on a fitted blazer and feel confident about going to work.
Skirts: A cut like the one below screams professional!
Team a pencil skirt with a lightweight silk or cotton top. Pencil skirts are classy and keep your look professional, while your top can convey a more summer feel. If a plain top is too dull for you, pair it with a statement necklace or colorful scarf. Also, there are plenty of colourful tops that can give your outfit a bit of zing while remaining professional.
Pair it with a colorful (but traditionally cut) button down shirt. Depending on your office, a jacket may not even be necessary. If your skirt is a bit more casual or has a fuller cut to it - keep your jacket as it is not as professional.
Be careful of the 'frump' factor when you wear skirts below the knee - this is typically not a good length for any body type especially at work. It should end right above your knee! In the summer we have the tendency to wear jersey - stay away from this all together...it never looks professional and rarely fits a woman's body beautifully.
Light Suits: You dont' have to wear the matching suit together - Wear the pants or the jacket with other items to make it more versatile, but this color NEVER goes out of style and is still very professional. Wear a lightweight/sleeveless shirt underneath the jacket and stay a bit cooler. A white blazer is always a smart buy - it goes with everything and you can pair it with your grey or black pants and skirts for a more traditional look, but still be 'summery' and professional. To save a bit of money, you can buy a suit or pants in a seasonless fabric - many designers are getting smart about budgets and helping us to manage our wardrobe expenses! Call me if you have questions on where to buy them.

Image and Personal Success
Dear Clients and Friends,
I have been so preoccupied with talking about the importance of image in the workplace; I haven’t spent enough time talking about the importance of your image on a personal level. I heard a sermon last Sunday that really hit home with me…the Pastor spoke about something very near and dear to my own life – how image affects us as women, wives, mothers etc…He did hit on the importance of image in the workplace as well by saying that your appearance is more important than your resume, IQ or qualifications! I couldn’t agree more! He continued by saying that how you look determines how people look at you - I couldn’t believe I was in church!
It was what he said about the personal side of appearance that really resonated with me. He said that some people will say to him that they don’t want people to look at them from the outside, but to look at them and see their heart as God sees their heart…he continues to quote a scripture that says men (human beings) don’t do that, only God does! He then continues to say that no man ever looked at a woman and said dear God check out her brain, haha. I could never deliver the line on paper as well as when he says it (with a ton of humor accompanied by his straightforward nature), but the principal rings very true! People unfortunately will judge you by your appearance and create ideas about you before you’ve even had a chance to introduce yourself – does your wardrobe represent who you are? A great point he makes is that men are visual creatures made that way by God – and even if we have been married for many years, we can’t forget that! Please do not get complacent on the weekends! Think of the weekends as your time to shine with your partners – I’m not suggesting that you have to give up comfort for fashion, but don’t give up on fashion completely just because it is a Saturday.
As women, we wear so many hats – and I know how easy it is to get caught putting ourselves last…and our fashion can become a bit monotonous and unflattering. I also understand how easy it is to substitute comfort for fashion, but I want to encourage you to not do that. We owe it to ourselves to look the best we can look at all times, even when we are watching our kids play soccer on a hot day. If you don’t buy dowdy clothing, you can’t reach for it.
My policy is to always be very honest with my friends and clients about fashion and their image. I have listed a few fashion traps below that I often see and want you to avoid! Please pick up the May copy of At Home Tennessee magazine – you will see my suggestions for some fabulous transition pieces that will take you from spring to summer seamlessly!
Please call or e-mail me to set up a complimentary consultation. I would love to help you with all of your fashion needs.

Fashion Tips!
· Loose t-shirts (ones that could fit two of you) are for working out and gardening (if you are single and looking to find someone, I would veer away from them in any public place). Regardless of your size, you can find comfortable clothing for working out that doesn’t create more weight where you don’t have it.
· Crocs are for the garden. If your husband/boyfriend has a 9 to 5 job during the week and your weekends are your quality time together, I would stay away from them on the weekends even if you are gardening. I have a few examples below that are comfortable substitutes!
· BE CAREFUL WITH CROPPED PANTS! Please refer to the March 09 newsletter for my tips on wearing cropped pants for the summer.
· Bras that do not support you – this is the number one place you cannot get lazy. Even on a ‘comfort first’ day, a great bra will give you a polished look. Typically a lace bra will not give you any support. Your chest should be rounded to a degree and lifted. If this is not the case, you are not wearing the right bra. If your flesh bulges over the bra at the armpits — the side wings are too narrow. You may need a fuller-figure-style bra. If flesh bulges over the back under band - the under band is too small. 9 out of 10 times, you need a wire for extra support…a plain cotton bra will most likely not hold you up appropriately. 80% of the time, my clients haven’t been fitted for bras in a very long time – get fitted by somebody who really knows what they are doing and get suggestions from sales people. Don’t hesitate to ask for the expert in the store – if you are in Nashville I have suggestions!
· The number one mistake women make is with pants. The fit of your pant done incorrectly can age you and make you look frumpy regardless of the rest of your outfit. Many times we think that looser fitting pants look better – this is never the case with work pants! (See March 09 newsletter for pant fit).
· Wear make-up. It doesn’t have to be the entire face, but you will always feel better and your partner will appreciate it! Mascara, lip gloss and a bit of blush will do when you are limited on time. If you don’t have time to do your hair, pull it back in a sexy loose bun and side sweep your bangs. You can even take a curling iron to the short pieces on top and pin them back with bobby pins for a tousled but beautiful look.
· Facial hair – this is the number one complaint I get from boyfriends/husbands on my questionnaires. If you don’t have a magnifying mirror, I suggest you buy one! If you have any hair on your upper lip whatsoever, even if you think it is light – get it waxed!
· Gray hair. This is tricky. 99% of the time, I would suggest getting it dyed. A full head of gray hair can be stunning depending on the woman. If you have straggly gray pieces mixed in with your brown or black, definitely get it dyed!
· Never buy a piece of clothing that you can’t include into your current wardrobe – this is a huge trap! I have seen many a closet where pieces still have tags after months because there is absolutely nothing to wear with them.
· If you wouldn’t buy it at regular price, don’t buy it just because it is on sale.
· Do NOT pay attention to sizes, and never buy anything anticipating that it will fit after you lose 5 pounds. Your body shape changes when you lose weight and the piece may not look good anyway. Stores and designers are not consistent with their sizes – if you are an 8 in one store and a 12 in another, don’t worry! Buy the size that fits your body the best – nothing is worse than wearing something that is too tight and pulling in the wrong places.
· Do not wait to lose weight to buy clothing that makes you feel and look good! So many times I hear from clients that they waited months/years to finally buy clothing that makes them feel fantastic. You should look fabulous at any weight and body shape. If you look your best, it will encourage you to keep looking that way. Otherwise, you may get pulled into a style rut.
· Take time for yourself. If you have ignored your fashion, take control now! You deserve to feel beautiful daily, and I truly believe that if you look good you will reach further in life. People around you will be inspired by you – including your children, colleagues, friends and partner!
· There are two wardrobe items that should ALWAYS be top notch – your purse and your sunglasses. Even if you are wearing something that isn’t your favorite, your purse and your glasses will keep you in the game if they are smashing.
Here are some fantastic summer shoe options that are comfortable and fashionable.
The two on the bottom right are the 'Born' brand - equally fashionable and made for comfort!

"Look competent, be competent!"

Leonard Lauder, Chairman of the Estee Lauder Companies, was asked by Glamour Magazine to give a few suggestions on keeping your job in the current conditions! It was no surprise that his first suggestion was to dress the part - in his words, "Look competent, be competent."
This statement couldn’t be truer – when you dress well, you tend to work harder and are naturally more confident. What you put on in the morning will dictate your mood, and at times your ambition for the rest of the day. Your clothing sends messages to everyone you interact with throughout the day – your boss, clients, friends, peers, and management…literally everyone. You can control those messages by making sure that your clothing always says what you want it to say. You, your job and your image are worth the investment – take the time to make sure that you are putting your best foot forward in all situations, especially at work.

MSNBC: Some job seekers may need extreme makeover! (A Must Read)
“She got the job, and we've joked with her ever since that we hired her because of her shoes.”
Dear Friends,
Your appearance does matter - especially now! This article from MSNBC really stresses the importance of looking your absolute best if you are in the job market (or if you are trying to keep the one you currently have). The above quote was taken from the article below, and it couldn't be truer. It was said in jest, but in reality - her shoes made an impact! Her resume, qualifications and her SHOES/image were what put her over the top of the other applicants. I wanted to share this article with you because of the valuable information, but also for its honest view about the tough job market today and what is expected in order to be successful.
If you are unsure about your image, feel as if you may need an update or are looking for a new career path - please call me for a complimentary consultation. We will review your goals, needs and wardrobe to see if they are working for you or against you.
I look forward to hearing from you!

Some job seekers may need extreme makeover
Forget the flip-flops — in a tough economy, sloppy grooming won't cut it

By Eve Tahmincioglu
Out of work since he was laid off in August from his job as a campus recruiter for JPMorgan, Staffieri, 28, knew he had the credentials to find another position in human resources. But something seemed to be holding him back.
He sought advice from David A. McKnight, an image consultant he met through a mutual friend. Staffieri’s appearance is now more polished — and his confidence level has exploded.
Sloppy attire and a lack of grooming are just not going to cut it in this economy, human resource managers say, no matter what the industry. So you may have to turn up the style-o-meter. Hiring managers already are noticing that a growing number of job seekers seem to be dressing for success.
Staffieri's image tweaks included tailoring his suit so it fit properly; getting rid of the cloth messenger bag he slung over his shoulder and replacing it with a briefcase; exchanging his comfortable shoes for a shiny, leather pair; and combing his hair to the side instead of the middle to mask his receding hairline.
“I feel like a million dollars,” he said, adding that he’s now doing better in interviews.
Many employers around the country are inundated with qualified and overqualified applicants for every job they need to fill, which means they can be pickier than ever. And I don’t mean just choosy when it comes to job qualifications.
“They have to stand out from the rest, in the right way,” said Chris Cappas, vice president of employment and training for Harrah’s Las Vegas region. That means no halter tops or flip-flops, even if you're just coming in to fill out an application. “The competition is fierce.”
Appearance can separate you from the pack, said John Haynes, human resource director for Johnson Controls Inc. in Capital Heights, Md. “It can (even) help you lose an opportunity if you don’t present well.”
Fierce competition
Miller Canning learned that lesson after she was laid off from her job doing Web strategy for a homebuilder 18 months ago. For the first time in her technology career, she had trouble finding a new gig.
“I was stunned I wasn’t getting any offers,” she recalled. “My resume is robust.”
Canning, 51, who lived in Washington and recently relocated to Charlotte, N.C., looked in the mirror.
She had been letting her hair go gray and was used to the casual dress in the technology industry. In interviews, she usually wore casual trousers and a shirt, sometimes a denim jacket.
She decided it was time for an image overhaul. She dyed her hair, bought a killer brown wrap dress and beefed up her accessories.
Her reinvented look paid off. She landed a job in e-commerce with home improvement company Lowe’s and started work on April 13.
“Competition is just so fierce right now,” she said. “You need any edge that you can get.” I know, it’s disheartening to hear that you won’t be judged solely on experience and background but also by the way you look.
Unfortunately, that’s just part of human nature, and the tough economy is only making image more important, said David Sarwer, associate professor of psychology for the Center for Human Appearance at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
“For hiring managers, it’s clearly a buyer’s market,” he said. “They can be more selective ... not only hold out for the most qualified but the person who’s the most physically attractive.” That doesn't mean you have to take drastic measures to improve your appearance. With so much hype about plastic surgery and job seeking lately, the reality is that the number of people choosing to go under the knife is actually on the decline.
What hiring managers say they are looking for is not someone who has skin that’s as taut as a piano string but someone who looks put together and professional. Job seekers may even want to consider dropping a few pounds. Weight Watchers has seen an influx of unemployed people signing up recently, said Aransas Thomas, who leads classes in New York.
“I see people coming in who are feeling crummy about themselves because they’re out of work, and most have a reduction in confidence,” she added. The key, she said, is feeling better about you — both internally and externally. Sadly, bias against overweight people is a reality in the workplace.
“It appears being overweight can work against you, particularly women. Being obese works against both men and women,” said Patricia Roehling, professor of psychology at Hope College in Holland, Mich., who has studied the impact of weight among managers in corporate America.
Alas, there are no federal laws and few state laws that protect individuals who are discriminated against based on their weight or their lack of attractiveness. And attractiveness is subjective, said David Grinberg, a spokesman for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. “Some hiring officials may interpret such a directive to mean targeting or excluding workers based on traits related to race, national origin, religion, gender, age or because someone has a disability.” Which is, of course, illegal discrimination.
Reinventing your look
Looking fit also seems to be a selling point. Bob S., 47, a former Google manager from Saratoga, Calif., has been looking for an IT management job since June. To help in his job search, he dropped 35 pounds, thanks to bicycling; colored his hair; started wearing contacts to interviews; and now keeps his eyebrows trimmed. (He did not want his full name used for fear of affecting his job search.)
“All these feel vain, but maybe they'll help,” he said.
It’s not easy for everyone to update their look or lose weight on their own. You may want to enlist the help of a fitness trainer, a stylish friend or even invest some money on a style consultant.
McKnight, who helped revamp Staffieri’s image, has gotten so much interest from unemployed New Yorkers that he started a new service for the jobless. He offers a $300, three-hour makeover package, compared to the $150 an hour he usually charges. Kimberly Bohanon offers some simple style tips to help spruce up your look:
- If you haven’t updated your wardrobe in several years, invest in some new clothes. Buy quality pieces that are interchangeable.
- Your clothing should fit you well. If you are successful at finding ready-to-wear items off the rack, count yourself lucky. Often, minor alterations are needed in order to achieve optimum fit.
- Well-manicured hands and regularly trimmed hair are a must. If you haven’t updated your hairstyle in many years, it’s time to consider making some changes.
- Wrinkled or stained clothing look highly unprofessional.
- For many, shoes are a go-to accessory that add class and give insight to one’s personality.
Oh, the shoes. They can mean more than you think.
Dawn Gum, managing partner at Interior Architecture & Design in Research Triangle Park, N.C., recalls interviewing an entry-level applicant who had a great portfolio. She also had on a great pair of pea-green pumps with brown leather detailing.
“She got the job, and we've joked with her ever since that we hired her because of her shoes,” she said.

Important fashion tip from the Wall Street Journal!
- By CHRISTINA BINKLEY
Some people, upon hearing of 100 Women In Hedge Funds, suggest that they didn't know there were 100 women employed in hedge funds. But on a Tuesday evening at the Thomas Pink store on Madison Avenue in New York, 150 women -- each of whom knows her way around a spreadsheet -- discussed concerns they probably wouldn't raise in other settings. Are stockings necessary? What about out-dressing the managing partner?
Dressing for Success in the Job Market

Dressing For Success
I have had the privilege of working with hundreds of corporations, firms, agencies etc. As different as they have all been in terms of what they do and the work environment itself, they all ask me to come in and help them to either establish dress codes/policies or to speak to their employees about dressing for success. I know from experience what companies find most important, especially in these poor economic times; and I wanted to share with you the importance of dressing appropriately at work, ESPECIALLY NOW. If you are looking for a job or trying to keep the one you have, you cannot afford NOT to read this newsletter.
Now I am aware that the actual term, ‘dress for success’ sounds a bit cliché and is a tad overused – but it is more important than ever to actually know what it means! I have received more e-mails than I can count in the past four months asking me for tips on how to dress at work. With the state of the economy, the job market has become unstable and more competitive. I recently read an article that was titled, “Things I Wish I Had Done Before I Lost My Job.” What struck me about the article is the idea that none of us are powerless…you might be afraid of losing your position due to corporate cut backs, but there are things that you can do right now to take control of your life and career.
One of the most productive things you can do in unstable times is to take control of your image.
A professional image not only means you care about yourself, but that you care about (respect) the company you work for. Your “brand” is the first thing people think about you when they see you and is your most visible credential – your brand sticks with you - it is what people envision even when you are not with them. You directly affect the ‘brand’ of the office you work in, and thus affect the revenue for your company and yourself. Understanding your personal style will give you a tremendous advantage in business and help to create a viable brand. In order to be consistent, you must know your personal style and have the ability to reach into your closet without thinking twice about what you are pulling out. Your clothing is an important resource that you must not ignore!
Fashion creates a competitive advantage.

Research over the years tends to show that people who are well groomed, well mannered and well spoken are assumed to be more competent. The way you dress reflects directly on the company you work for (or own!) - and the last thing you want to do is to create any doubt in your ability or the ability of the company. Your clothing is an extension of who you are – you need to make sure that your ‘fashion’ is not saying something negative about you or your abilities.
When I speak to graduating university students I stress the importance of image first – before resumes. The point of a resume is to share what you know, what you have done and your skills; if you walk in the door and do NOT look the part, the resume is a useless piece of paper. I always tell them that if they remember nothing else from my talk they need to remember the idea that PEOPLE SEE YOU BEFORE THEY HEAR YOU. This means that people have already established whether or not what you have to say is of any value to them at all – regardless of your skills and abilities.
We all know about first impressions…
People typically form them within the first 5 seconds of seeing you.

Before you’ve ever said a word or extended your hand – people have already formed these valuable impressions – but MORE IMPORTANTLY, they have decided if you are even worth listening to. Social psychologists have determined that it takes about 30 seconds for someone meeting you for the first time to form a laundry list of impressions about your character and MORE IMPORTANTLY, your ABILITIES.
This list includes:
- Educational level
- Career competence and success
- Personality
- Level of sophistication
- Trustworthiness
In a study done of over 150 large corporations, they ranked poor appearance as being worse than a “hostile overbearing know it all.” There was another study done that involved sending out identical resumes to more than a thousand companies – some had ‘before’ pictures attached and some had ‘after’ pictures attached, and each company was asked to determine a starting salary. The results were incredible – starting salaries ranged 8-20% higher as a result of upgrading a mediocre business appearance to one that is polished and effective.
If you would like to have a wardrobe assessment, update/improve your wardrobe, change your image, establish your personal style and solidify your brand – please contact me for a complimentary consultation.
Warmest Regards,
Mila

Dear Clients and Friends,
Spring is here and so are the fantastic spring clothes! With all of the new styles and trends, it may get a bit overwhelming – but if you know the basic dos and don’ts, you will navigate the racks with ease. The key to remember is that not all new trends are for all of us…the jump suit has made an appearance of late and I don’t foresee myself suggesting it to many clients, ha.
You need to know your body type and proportions before you start shopping for new clothing - this will help you to buy items that you will wear. I am going to give you a few general quick tips on ‘fit’ when it comes to pants - pants seem to be the number one mistake women make.
Don’t forget to pick up a March copy of At Home Tennessee magazine; I have picked out some fantastic spring accessories you can incorporate into your wardrobes right now!
I have also had many requests for a “Dress for Success” newsletter – I will be sending one out at the end of the week. If I can help you find your personal style, clean out your closet, create a versatile wardrobe, update for spring or to dress for business success - please give me a call!
Happy shopping,
Mila
Tip #1: The most common mistake women make is with their pants. The best tip I can give you without looking at your body shape is to have pockets on BOTH sides of your rear (Even if this is only a slit for faux pockets). Regardless of the pant (jeans, slacks, khakis etc) you need to have pockets to balance out your rear end as well as break up the distance from your rear end to the bottom of your butt cheek. Most of the time I recommend that pockets are not ‘flap’ pockets (but it depends, if you have no rear and are tiny it can be a great way to create a faux curve), and your pocket should NEVER be situated on the spot where your rear end meets your leg. This adds length where we don’t need it, and makes it look like our rear ends are droopy – never a good thing.
Below are examples of great pocket placement. The pockets on the jeans are high enough to create lift even when one doesn’t exist and the black pants break up the distance from your waist to the bottom of your rear beautifully making it appear smaller.

Tip #2: Unless you are a stick figure, do not wear pants that are pegged in any capacity. You want the cuff of your pants to be in line with your hips. If not, your hips look much wider than they are. The best fit for most body shapes is when the pant comes in along the thighs and then goes into a modern boot cut at the bottom. The pants below on the left show this fit well, and they almost graze the floor elongating your legs. The shorter pants on the right chop off the leg, and the pegged look creates a ‘hippy’ effect that none of us want regardless of our body size.

Tip #3: Make sure your pants come ALL the way to the bottom of your heel or shoe. I have pants designated for flats and heels only. If they don’t, you will look completely disproportionate.
Tip #4: I know as soon as the days get warmer, I will begin to see cropped pants. This always scares me as they can really cut your body apart in negative ways. Make sure they are closer to your mid-calf, not your ankle. You don’t want people to question if your pants shrunk. Try to wear a wedge or heeled sandal without any straps around your ankle – this will make the line continue all the way down to your toes. The same pant rules apply…come in at the thighs and knee, and then go into a minor flair.

Dear Clients and Friends,
Happy Shopping!

Update your black or grey suits with pops of color for a sophisticated (and fun) look. Navy and white is always a classic pairing for any occasion - update your navy or black tops with a white skirt for a fresh springtime look!
(All pieces available at Dillards.com - the Antonio Melani "Park" Blouse (on the left) is on SALE for only $65! Original price was $109).
Spring colors we can look forward to!
Yellow will be a huge color for spring, but if you can only do color in small doses these are perfect examples. Pair a yellow cardigan with a classic black and white skirt, or wrap a green patent leather belt around your waist for a subtle yet colorful accent...and if you still can't handle that much color, pair the orange and canvas tote with a pair of jeans and a white shirt - classic but not boring!
Sale Tip of the Week!
Go to Dillards.com to buy this fantastic green croc-embossed Antonio Melani satchel on sale for $74.70! Original price $249.
If you need a bit of direction when it comes to your personal wardrobe or with clothing updates, please give me a call to set up a complimentary consultation.
Start updating your wardrobe now with some color in a smart way – through accessories! Colorful bangles, scarves, belts and bags are the perfect way to update for spring while creating a polished look. The right accessories will instantly upgrade your look from mediocre to chic. Don't forget to pick up the latest edition of At Home Tennessee magazine where you can see more of my choices for being stylish on a budget!
It is necessary to look at shopping for new clothing as an investment. Invest in pieces that are quality, will last, and that you are 100% sure of. If you put something on and don’t immediately have a positive reaction to it – don’t buy it!
If you know which clothing styles work for your body shape along with clothing lines that accent your best features, filling or updating ‘holes’ that you have in your wardrobe will be easier than you think. Many of us have wasted money on pieces that we think we will wear later, but never had anything in our closets that it went with in the first place. It is always important to make sure that we are updating or accenting current items in our wardrobe with our new spring colors and accessories.
I know how dreary the winter months can get, and how monotonous our wardrobes can become as we wait for spring. Even though it is only February, you can start purchasing some spring wardrobe updates now! I know with the state of the economy that many of us are dreading the updating process…but I am here to tell you – if you know your personal style, you won’t waste money on items you will never wear.

New Year – New You

Dear Clients and Friends,
As 2008 comes to a close, it is the perfect time to start thinking about your goals for next year. January 1st brings you an opportunity to reinvent yourself, change things you don’t like and start down a fresh path. Maybe you need to jumpstart these changes with your image – image and fashion done correctly will boost your confidence and help you reach goals that you may have put on the back burner.
Ask yourself these questions:
· How do people perceive me? Do I want to change that image?
· What kind of first impression do I give? Do I want to change that impression?
· What do my clothes say about me? Do I want to change what they say?
Everyone deserves to have their own signature style – and to make a statement about who they are through the fashion. I hear people say that image and fashion aren’t important and they don’t care about making a statement – but they are making a statement and it says ‘I don’t care.’ Take the time to assess your goals, dreams, and create lasting New Year’s resolutions…and ask yourself if your clothing and image are helping you to achieve those goals or hindering you.
Please give me a call if I can help you to reach your dreams and have a bit of fun along the way!
Happy Holidays!

You only get one chance to make a first impression. And there are many, many pitfalls to be dodged.
But a little common sense and some attention to detail usually can save the day, says Mila Lukich, president of MODA Image Consulting. Lukich is often hired by companies to coach top and emerging executives how to dress to win.
“You’re really creating a brand, and you do that with what you wear, how you wear it and how you are groomed,” Lukich says. “All that determines how people interact with you, and whether or not they’ll believe what you have to say is going to be of value to them.”
When advising people on image, Lukich sticks to the basics. Your hair and grooming should be neat and tidy, regardless of style, and by going with some classic elements, your wardrobe will project a quiet confidence.
“If your clothes don’t fit, if they’re wrinkled or stained, nobody is going to take you seriously. It’s just that simple,” Lukich says.
For women, the closet must-haves include well-fitted black slacks, a classic white shirt — Lukich recommends Brooks Brothers — and a matching bag. Add to that good shoes that are clean and scuff-free and nondistracting jewelry.
For gentlemen, a well-cut, tailored suit is the major player, with appropriate shirt and neckwear playing secondary roles. And, as for women, check to make sure those loafers aren’t scuffed.
Lukich also strongly suggests dropping the backpack in favor of a briefcase.
“Do not take a backpack anywhere unless you’re going to class,” Lukich says. “You’re attempting with your appearance to say ‘I’m in charge,’ and that definitely doesn’t do it.”
At the end of the day, it all boils down to basics.
“You’re competing for a job, and by looking your best you go a long way toward getting hired, or getting that piece of business,” Lukich says. “It doesn’t matter how smart you are if they’re looking at the gap between your blouse buttons instead of listening to what you have to say.”
5 Tips For Dressing To Make The Right Impression
1. You have 30 seconds; check to make sure everything’s where it should be before entering the potential employer’s, or client’s, office.
2. Be thorough: Is the skirt at the knee, the blouse buttoned, the tie free of stains? If you notice a problem, so will everyone else.
3. Cut your hair, trim your mustache, shape your sideburns. Hair, especially facial hair, that’s out of control on men will kill an opportunity quickly and efficiently.
4. Don’t complain about the cost of a suit. If the MBA cost $30,000 and the cheap suit keeps you from getting hired, where’s the value?
5. Accessorize appropriately. Dangling and jangling are don’ts, whether it’s earrings or other jewelry. Save the bling for later.

Dear Clients and Friends,
-
If you love a piece of clothing such as a coat in one of the department stores – take the time to walk to the other department store in the mall to see if they have the same coat. This only takes a minute and can sometimes save you 50% or more. There are a few department stores whose original prices on big ticket items START at almost double the price.
-
Look for price-matching policies. Some merchants will match, or even beat, a competitor’s prices.
-
Carefully consider bargain offers that are based on purchases of additional merchandise. For example, “Buy One, Get One Free” or “Free Gift with Purchase.” If you don’t really want or need the item, it’s not a deal.
-
Ask about sale adjustments. If you buy an item at regular price and it goes on sale the next week, can you get a credit or refund for the discounted amount?
-
One of the top new sites that collects all the online coupons of that type in one place is called RetailMeNot.com
-
Don’t buy something just because it is on sale – even if the item is only $1, it will be $1 wasted if you never wear it. Knowing your personal style and brand is essential when shopping for anything…make sure that everything you buy has something in your closet that goes with it – in essence, try to fill the holes you have – not create more gaps.
-
Are you one of those people who waits until the last minute to do your Christmas shopping? The closer it is to Christmas, you're going to have to fight the crowds, choose from limited merchandise, and wait in long lines. Go now!
-
Most stores aren't very busy early in the morning or late at night. Shop at slow times and you can forgo the crowds and long lines.
-
Be prepared for broken items, wrong sizes and duplicate gifts. Always save shopping receipts for 90 days after your purchase. This is about how long stores will allow returns for unwanted items.
-
Coupons aren’t just in newspapers or direct mail anymore. If you know particular stores where you’ll shop, get on their e-mail lists – you’ll start getting coupons and news of specials on a regular basis. Now you can even sign up to receive mobile coupons on your cell phone, just take your phone into the store and show them the coupon for some Christmas deals.
Please let me know if I can help you with any of your holiday shopping needs! MODA offers gift certificates for everyone on your list! Give a gift that lasts a lifetime!

Investment Dressing
Dear clients and friends,
I have been on the corporate talking circuit this month, and I have discovered a common theme between all of them. After a period of too much casualness in the workplace, the return to a more polished, expert look has come back. Research over the years tends to show that people who are well groomed, well mannered and well spoken are assumed to be more competent. The way you dress reflects directly on the company you work for and your own ability - and the last thing you want to do is to create any doubt in your ability or the ability of the company. If you wear old, worn out, ill-fitting or frumpy clothing – or have hair and makeup that is outdated or disheveled; this will undoubtedly reflect negatively on the company and yourself regardless of how good you are at your job.
Now is the time to upgrade your work wardrobe. When a man or woman invests in new attire, the message is very clear: He or she, [and the company] is healthy and confident. We need to invest in the well-made timeless classics - or as The Wall Street Journal's Christina Binkley puts it, "Clothing that will survive trends and frequent dry-cleaning." There is a need for a professional corporate image that allows today’s professional to create the best impressions they can for themselves and the companies they work for. In an increasingly competitive work arena, every advantage is necessary not just for continued growth but for the very existence of your company and your job.
Long before I am near enough to talk to you on the street, in a meeting, or at a party, you announce your sex, age and class to me through what you are wearing - and very possibly give me important information (or misinformation) as to your occupation, origin, personality, opinions, tastes, desires and current mood. I may not be able to put what I observe into words, but I register the information unconsciously; and you simultaneously do the same for me.
- Alison Lurie
The quote above stresses the importance of creating a positive first impression. Now, 30 seconds or less doesn’t allow you time to pull out your resume, explain that you have talent, skills, training, and career success. These quick impressions are lasting – psychologists call this the ‘halo’ effect. When your visual message is positive (clothes, hairstyle, the way you carry yourself, smile, and other non-verbal communication), they tend to assume that other aspects about you are equally positive.
You can’t recreate a FIRST IMPRESSION. Knowing your personal BRAND will help you to avoid making purchases that you won’t ever wear while wasting money and valuable time – if you know your brand, you are more likely to buy items that fit within your definition.
Please call me if you need help establishing your brand, a personal style and a wardrobe that lasts. You will SAVE money in the long run if you know who you are in terms of fashion and how it relates to your personal and professional goals. Let me help you make your first impression the RIGHT one - versus your clothing saying something you don’t mean at all.
Warmest Regards,
Mila
Shop Wisely
The three items you should spend money on: shoes, handbags, coats/jackets. Buy classics. High quality lasts forever and you’re less likely to tire of them. You can “rest” them for a season or two, because a classic always comes back in style as a vintage piece. Rather than saying, “I can’t afford to pay a lot of money for my clothes,” the smart business person says, “I can’t afford to dress badly by buying poorly fitting, inexpensive clothes.” The truth is, quality clothing is made of quality fabric – they drape better and last longer.
COATS
A classic black (or neutral colored) trench coat will never go out of style. Pick one that complements your body style. Red is the new neutral! A red coat makes a powerful statement and will go with everything in your wardrobe. If you want a coat with a bit of an edge, this Loeffler Randall charcoal is versatile enough to stylishly take you from the office to dinner to the theater.

SHOES
Whether you are looking for a boot or a heel, pick one that will last through the seasons. The shoes below are classics that you can wear anywhere and will not go out of style! All available at Dillards.com.

BAGS
Invest in a handbag that will last - you carry it with you daily and this one piece will have the most visibility. Even on a day when you can't seem to pull yourself together, a classic handbag will save your entire look. All options below are available at Dillards.com.

“But many Baby Boomers have felt left out. What's a forty- or fiftysomething woman to do if she isn't ready to shop at Coldwater Creek (CWTR) with her own mother but feels too mature for spaghetti straps and miniskirts?”
Hi Friends!
I wanted to share an article with you that I thought you might find interesting. I took the excerpt above from the article titled, “Clothing Stores Rediscover Boomers,” from the Money section of a recent edition of USA Today. The general theme is that clothing stores do not cater to middle-aged women. I know from experience that many of my clients come to me because they are frustrated by the clothing options – they tell me that the choices are too frumpy, too old or too youthful. The CEO of Talbot’s was quoted in this article saying that she is trying to make an effort to bring in new styles, colors and fabrics to the store that cater to real women who aren’t ready to surrender.
“In their zeal to lure big-spending teens and twentysomethings, many stores seemed to forget that many Baby Boomer women favor clothes that blend the traditional and the stylish.”
The problem with finding clothes that work for you isn’t about a store, it’s about knowing who you are and what your individual style is. Once you know your likes and dislikes, and understand what works and doesn’t work for you body shape – it is much easier to find clothes that work for you. You will never find an entire wardrobe at one specialty store whether it be Talbot’s, Chico’s or Ann Taylor – the key is to buy pieces that work for you at a variety of small stores and department stores, and then knowing how to put them together to accomplish your style goals. A great way to show your individual style is through accessories, handbags, shoes and colors – you can be unique and show you individuality even when you are at work if you know what pieces work for you.
Here are some of my favorite ‘pieces’ from a variety of stores that are fun, feminine, classic and definitely not ‘dowdy!’ If you are having trouble finding your own style, please call or e-mail to set up a complimentary consultation!
Happy Shopping!

· Do you feel frustrated when you go into your closet and have nothing you love to wear?
· Do you let your appearance slide and think it doesn’t matter because you are at home?
· People see what you are wearing before they hear what you have to say – does your clothing represent who you are and what you believe?

Earlier this month, the fashion world lost one its legendary designers…Yves Saint Laurent. Even if you weren’t personally familiar with his work, you were undoubtedly influenced by his revolutionary designs. In 1962, he launched his own label just as women were really starting to enter into the workplace – and he created clothes that would allow them to compete with their male counterparts. He showed the world that women could be attractive in pants, men's tuxedo jackets, nipped- in suits, pea coats, trench coats and safari jackets. He became an icon for the women’s liberation movement – gracefully paving the way for women to dress as powerfully as they felt. In the world of fading trends, his designs are still perfectly modern decades after their shocking debuts on the runway years ago.
"It pains me physically to see a woman victimized, rendered pathetic, by fashion." - Yves Saint Laurent
Today is the day that you can commit yourself to making long lasting change that will impact your life forever; rather than continue to create short-term fixes that waste money and don’t last.

Oscar de la Renta and more…
Dear clients and friends,
It has been quite an exciting month for me personally and professionally as I was able to meet and spend time with one of fashion’s greatest icons, Oscar de la Renta. He graced us with his presence at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center where he presented his exquisite fall 2008 collection alongside his stepdaughter Eliza who is the Vice President of the licensing department, and his son-in-law Alex Bolen who is the CEO of the company. You will be able to see a glimpse of the fashion show in the May edition of At Home Tennessee magazine, but can go to www.athometn.com to read the entire interview I did with Mr. de la Renta along with all of the pictures from the show after May 1st – I don’t want to give anything away, but I would like to share with you that he is as exquisite as the clothing he designs, and his family represents him and the company with a grace and elegance that is not easy to find these days. As a true ‘fashionista’ at heart, I have always admired Mr. de la Renta, but now I can say that it is the man himself along with the clothing he so passionately designs that is truly an inspiration.
In his honor, I am going to dedicate this newsletter to him and his fashion. As many of you know, I never support anything that I am not passionate about – and this line of clothing at Macy*s by Mr. de la Renta is beyond exciting! He loves women, and shows this passion for femininity and strength in his designs – he creates clothing for ALL OF US, the real women. The clothes fit; they are luxurious and make you feel like you have stepped out of a fashion magazine without any effort. If you haven’t yet discovered the magnificent line sold exclusively at Macy’s, I would like to introduce it to you. It is simply called, O Oscar by Oscar de la Renta. You will quickly find that the quality and luxury he is known for is not lacking in this line simply because it is affordable.
If you have any questions on what pieces from his lines would look best on you, please feel free to call or e-mail me! I hope you enjoy the clothing as I have!
Thank you Mr. de la Renta – I will be singing your praises for years to come!
Happy shopping!

Interview with Oscar de la Renta
I’m not one of those people who squeals around famous people – having worked in the music industry for a brief (yet exhilarating) stint, I was able to meet some of the greats…and I can assure you, there was no squealing. Meeting Mr. de la Renta was a bit different though – his clothing and designs have always been a form of art that inspired me. I have consistently been drawn to his designs – if I am flipping through Vogue and suddenly go ‘ooohhh,’ you can almost be certain that it is a de la Renta design. So truth be told, I was completely overwhelmed in the limo bus of all places to be sitting with him, without any distractions and 20 minutes to ask him anything I wanted. WOW. (Let me thank Mr. Bolen for this opportunity. He so graciously invited me to ride with them to their private jet when he found out earlier that evening that I still had not yet had a chance to interview Mr. de la Renta. He is a complete gentleman and extraordinary businessman).
Mr. de la Renta arrived two hours before the show that took place at the Nashville Schermerhorn Symphony, and at midnight was off again to New York to “work on the spring collection” for 2009 – and can I add here that he looked as fresh and energetic as I imagine he would at 8am.
When I asked him about why he chose to create a line of clothing for Macy’s, he answered, “(I design for) a woman who cannot afford to buy the expensive clothes now, but perhaps one day will be able to.” He added, “Obviously, I try to create the same kind of clothes that I do for the expensive line. You know, I can only design clothes one way. That is always doing the best that I can to make a woman look her very best.” The Oscar de la Renta woman is defined as elegant and sophisticated, and the Macy's line exemplifies this statement.
“A part of it fulfills and represents something that I feel is very important to be part of the picture when I present the whole collection.” When I ask if he has any favorites, he smiles and says, “I have no favorites, you know, I like them all. Probably I like the one that nobody likes because I feel sorry for the dress.”
As we drive through downtown Nashville he takes a moment to look at Tootsie’s sign that is flashing at us…a few moments later he turns to me again and I ask him if he enjoys Nashville.
Do you like country music?
What do you do to relax and find peace?
At the age of 18, he moved to Spain, where he studied painting at the Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. He admits that his first love was painting and I wanted to know if he still enjoys picking up a brush.

2008 can be your MOST STYLISH year ever...What I truly love most about fashion is that it can transform us, change our moods, inspire us to reach new heights, and give us a renewed sense of confidence and purpose. Fashion, done properly can make us feel powerful, unstoppable, sexy, beautiful, adventurous and glamorous.
Do you feel this way? Does your clothing represent what you want it to? If not – why not? Change is a frightening thought to many people, but stepping out of one’s comfort zone may be one of the best decisions you will ever make. The common misconception about determining your personal style is the idea that it is a financial burden. In truth, finding your style is the one thing you can do to ensure you save money – once you know what your clothing ‘needs to say’ about you, it is harder to make a mistake by making an impulse purchase. This knowledge saves you money, but it also saves you valuable time and the frustration of not knowing what purchases to make.
Whether you are a homemaker, an attorney, thinking about returning to the work place or seeking new career opportunities; it is vital that you understand the significance of creating a consistent brand through the ‘fashions’ you wear. If you are having a tough time determining your brand and personal style, or would like to discuss making a change in your image - Please do not hesitate to call me for a complimentary consultation.
Warmest Regards,
The Look for Less
Here are a few tips I've found and used on how to shop 'intelligently,' especially if you are on a budget!
Redefine the word sale
Sounds basic, but to really save a bundle on clothes you have to be willing to pass up enticing promotions (15% off; free shipping; gift with purchase) and hold out for the hard-core sales (40% off is good; 50% and up will land you a buy for almost what it cost the retailer).
Don't stop buying
I constantly tell my clients and friends to shop often, yet shop sparingly. One common mistake we make is to panic and run to the mall 'needing' everything from underwear to jeans. I have seen many of my own friends spend tremendous amounts of money on items that may not suit them well, are not on sale and will not be in style for the next season - This is truly shopping panic! You will save money if you shop every so often for updates to your wardrobe. Compare this idea to dieting - how we pass on sweets and carbs until we binge. Scary, but it can happen with pent-up shopping desires, too (and credit card debt racked up in a binge will end up costing you a fortune). Satiate the fashion lover in you with a very small treat, and try to add only one or two well thought out items per month.
Shop in season
And that's fine if you're just looking for any old thing to wear. But if you love fashion (and you do, or you wouldn't be here), you should shop as close to the season as possible. Otherwise, you'll just waste your money on trends that will be out of style by the time the next year rolls around.
Swap with pals
Friends that wear your size (and share your taste) are a gold mine. You can even go large scale and organize a swap meet where everyone can switch shoes, clothes, etc.
In the first step of cleaning out your closet, eliminate everything that doesn't fit or that you haven't worn in a year. (A few weeks later, go back and get rid of all the stuff you fudged on the first time around).
With what's left, begin identifying a theme to your wardrobe, relying on favorite looks, colors and lifestyle pieces. Decide on three colors that either match or will coordinate with what you own and buy only those three colors for apparel.
Make a list of all the items you need in your wardrobe. (For example: black pants, GREAT pair of jeans, white shirt)
Set aside some time each week or at least every other week to shop -- online or off.
Invest in clothing that will span two to three seasons at minimum – these are the basics.
Create a comprehensive wardrobe
Purchase only clothes that work with something that you already own if you are buying separates. Don't fall into the trap of buying a blouse with an intricate pattern and only end up looking at it for a year because you have nothing to wear it with.
Avoid the 'maybe one day' trap
Pass on anything that doesn't fit -- no matter how great a buy.
One way to be trendy on a budget is with accessories. You can play with colors and textures through scarves, shoes, and handbags. This will save you money by not buying more expensive pieces that will only last one season.
Stop impulse buying.
Every $10 mistake you would have picked up in the bargain bin goes to a really great wardrobe.

Creating a Signature Style
Through many seasons and trends, Anna Wintour (Editor of Vogue and icon) has her dark sunglasses and classic bob, Donatella Versace (Designer) has her long blonde hair - and Karl Lagerfeld (Best known as designer for the Chanel brand) is known for his black sunglasses, white hair and pony tail. Learn from these style arbiters and find your own signature style guaranteed to make a statement.
(Karl and Anna)

Here's How:
- Take a serious assessment of your overall current style, deciding if you are traditional, modern, fashion-forward, casual, hippie natural, etc.
- Determine what you are trying to accomplish with your signature style -- to be more memorable, develop an always chic look, have more fun with fashion and so on.
- Study famous tastemakers -- from all of the ones mentioned above to Carrie Donovan and her oversized glasses, black clothes and blond hair.
- Don't hesitate to imitate a look and make it your own, making sure it fits into your current style and personality.
- Decide what you would be most comfortable changing -- your hair, wardrobe colors or accessories.
- If you're choosing a striking new hairstyle or color, try the new look in stages to see how it works.
- If you are choosing a bold new wardrobe color, start by incorporating it as a tie or scarf color to see how well it works for you.
- Relying on accessories -- sunglasses, big pins, bright hosiery or fabulous handbags -- is a safe, easy and inexpensive way to start a personalized look.
- Experiment and alter your signature style pieces as you grow more confident.
Tips:
1). Use your signature style to camouflage flaws or draw attention to your best features.
2). Try not to cross the fine line between signature style and affectation

Fashion Resolutions
1). Take the time each morning to put on your face. Looking your best each day will inspire you to do things that you might not have done if you looked sloppy. If you are running low on time, try to at least grab your mascara and lip gloss!
If you take nothing from this newsletter, try to remember these few tips:
· Your husbands and boyfriends do care about what you are wearing. Try to dress for them every once in a while
DO YOU DRESS WITH CONFIDENCE?
How often do you find yourself staring hopelessly into your closet, dreadful of what's before your eyes as if you were looking into a frightful abyss? Do you constantly reach for the same pair of trousers, for that one wrap dress you purchased a decade ago? If your answer to these questions is "more often than not" you may well have fallen into a fashion rut.
The Fit of Your Clothes
(Recommendation: Very Sexy bra by Victoria's Secret).
Jewelry: One of the quickest and most effective ways to achieve a stylish appearance is with jewelry. Especially a piece of bold jewelry. A chunky necklace, bracelet or earrings (not all worn at once!) will make people stand up and take notice of you. And for your own personal benefit, you'll simply feel more fashionable.
Wearing all black is fine. It is always slimming and sleek. But wearing a subtle pattern or a splash of color on occasion tells people that you aren't afraid to be noticed. Additionally, color can be used to distract from any areas on your body you may consider a "problem," resulting in a confident new you. Here are some other tips regarding hues.
Mix colors: Don't feel compelled to match everything. Wearing an orange top may be a big step for you, but make it look fresh by pairing it with chocolate brown, charcoal or burgundy. Try wearing pink with heather gray or navy. The key is to feel confident, so if you're more comfortable wearing a bright color on top and a dark color on the bottom, by all means do so.

Fashion is architecture; it is a matter of proportions. - Coco Chanel
What is your body shape, and what is it telling you?
Yes, fashion can be overwhelming, especially with the constant change in trends...but it doesn't have to be if you know what you are looking for when you go shopping. Knowing your body type will save you time and money, and will also allow you to look forward to getting dressed no matter where you are going. Many of my clients have closets full of clothes with nothing to wear because they have mismatched pieces of clothing with no true flow, and styles that do not fit their bodies. Knowing how to dress to flatter your body type as well as being aware of which styles to avoid are essential in establishing your individual style and personality in clothing. The key to buying and wearing good clothes is the fit of each piece on your body shape. If the clothes are cut properly, drape and fall correctly on you, that means that they fit you well and will make you stand out. If not, then even the most expensive article of clothing will be a waste of money.
To look good and feel good, it is essential to determine your body type, body shape and skin color to see what suits you the best. Selecting the right type of fabric with suitable textures will also help in determining what looks good on you. Squeezing into a smaller size does not make you smaller; it will most likely make you look like you have gained weight. On the flip side, wearing baggy, bigger clothing in an attempt to hide things does not work either. You will undoubtedly make yourself look sloppy and larger. Don't buy what you wish you looked good in, but what really does compliment you.
The foundation
It is imperative that you buy undergarments that work for your body type. They are the foundation of any outfit, and can make or break the way you look. A great bra or pair of underwear can make you look ten pounds lighter instantly. There are countless products on the market today from spanx to body shapers that can instantly make the difference between good and poor posture, confidence and insecurity, well-fitting clothing or a disheveled look.
Color matters
I had a client who went from people asking her if she was sick all of the time to people asking her if she was in love, all because she changed the colors in her wardrobe. Suddenly it seemed like her skin was glowing, her eyes were shining and she was well rested and ready to take the world by storm. People will take notice!
And remember, feeling confident about what you're wearing is the most important fashion tip out there. There is NOTHING wrong with feeling pretty, sexy, and fabulous even if you are simply attending a sporting event for your children or shopping for groceries. If you are lost when you enter your closet, haven't changed your look in years, or just need a quick update to your wardrobe; please give me a call for a complimentary consultation. I would love to help you find the true fashionista in you.

Mila
If your hips have caused you years of tears, then buck up and start dressing around them. The following tips will allow you to minimize the pear shape that you have been cursing since puberty.
- Skirts: Fuller, below-the-knee skirts conceal wider hips. Avoid high-waisted pencil skirts and opt for A-line styles and skirts with hemline details, which balance your shape.
- Trousers: Sport fuller, wide-leg pants. Avoid cropped pants, which make your legs look shorter.
- Dresses: Well defined waists with fuller skirts can hide a multitude of sins! Try strapless or V-neck styles to draw the eye upward and away from your lower half.
- Jackets: Damn those shrunken-style jackets that are so in right now! They only draw attention to hips and backsides. Stick to longer jackets that camouflage the hip area.
- Tops/Sweaters: Whenever possible, go with halter styles and boat necks, which create the illusion of broader shoulders. Steer clear of clingy or tight tops. Tops should be fitted and focus the eye to your upper body (beautiful necklines, patterns and colors).
Not that diet and exercise aren't good for you, but sometimes cutting down on the cheesecake just isn't enough to get rid of that tummy you have had since, well, birth. Follow these simple tips to minimize your waistline.
- Dresses: Wear a wide belt over a dress to streamline your shape. Look for styles that have gathered fabric in strategic places, called ruching, which pulls you in at the middle, and V-necks, which draw the eye upward.
- Tops: Men's-style shirts tucked into trousers and skirts camouflage the middle area and are always "Katherine Hepburn" chic.
- Layered Tops: Layered chiffon tops create the illusion of "lightness" around the belly area. As with dresses, try ruched tops to hold you in and V-necks to distract the eye.
- Jackets: Stick to slightly tapered jackets to create a slimmer waist.
You can only add so many inches with high heels. It's true they look great, are slimming and make you feel taller, but they also absolutely kill your feet. When you want to give your tootsies a break, try these tricks.
- Trousers: Finding pants that make you look taller is easy. Long, wide-leg trousers lengthen legs. Pinstripes and front creases are also flattering for those who could use a few more inches.
- Skirts: Short skirts will make all women look taller. They don't have to be minis; just-above-the-knee lengths work too. If you're "vertically challenged," longer skirts will make you look like you are standing in a hole.
- Dresses: Empire-waist dresses lengthen your bottom half. Try above-the-knee lengths here as well.
- Tops: Drop V-necks with a vertical stripe create the look of a longer torso. Long slim sweaters will also make you look longer.
- Jackets: Keep 'em short and sweet. Longer jackets will make you look shorter.
DON'T BELIEVE ME? LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE VIRTUAL MODEL
This model will demonstrate how significantly the cut of your clothing can affect your body shape. This model is based upon a woman who is approximately 5'8" and weighs 190 lbs.

Above are two different styles of the classic work pant. The brown cut accentuates the hips because of the peg leg cut at the ankle. You should only wear the 'peg-leg' or 'skinny' pant style if you have a boyish thin figure. These styles create curves, and if already have them...you don't want to accentuate them! .
The black pair create a slimming look through the hips and thighs while elongating the leg. The cut around the ankle is the perfect width, and creates a proportional look because the hips and the pant leg bottom are about the same size...If you have wider hips, do NOT wear pants that are slimmer at the ankle and foot. I would suggest this for almost any body type, unless you are a stick figure who can carry off the 'skinny jeans' trend...If you are curvy and beautiful, it is best to stick to pants that are not pegged in any way.
WHICH PAIR OF JEANS DO YOU THINK IS THE MOST SLIMMING?
(SAME MODEL - 5 different pairs of jeans)

Low rise boot cut Low rise flare Low rise slim boot cut Mid rise boot cut High rise straight leg
The cuts above apply to all styles of pants, they just happen to be jeans in this example.
Let's begin with the 'high rise straight leg.' If you have jeans that look like this, please THROW THEM AWAY! This is the famous "MOM" cut which does not do anything for your body type, and only accentuates the widest part of your body while creating a shape that is unflattering. The high waist on her body type and pegged pant at the ankle create a 'pearish' look.
The 'low rise flare' accentuate the thighs more than they should because of the flared bottoms and the tightness of the jeans around the thighs. It is personal whether you like low or mid rise jeans, but I would suggest mid rise jeans 99% of the time. Any of these styles can be bought in low, mid or high rise...For this example we are simply looking at the cut from the hips down. Either way, you should have chosen the 'boot cut' pants as the best fit. The slim boot cut is a great option for a night out with heels...they add length because they are in proportion with your hips and elongate your leg. The regular boot cut jeans also work, but you have to be careful that the boot cut doesn't teeter on 'flare.'
Last but not least!!! Please pay attention to the 'whiskered' effect on the 'low rise flare,' and the 'low rise slim boot cut.' If jeans are distressed, bleached or ‘whiskered’ in the wrong place it can add weight, make you look wider and highlight a problem area that could have been easily hidden with a darker more even wash. When in doubt go for an even jean tone!

Yes, your life can begin to change for the better if you start with the outside and work your way in...
I have learned through my clients that if you look amazing on the outside, it will inspire you to reach for other goals you may have brushed aside on the inside. Looking your absolute best is not as hard as you may think. A few changes here and there can completely alter the way you see yourself as well as how others see you. Getting dressed in the morning can be joyful and something you should look forward to. What we put on can dictate our day, our confidence level and even our work ethic. When we feel good about ourselves, anything is possible!
Our focus is not always on ourselves or our appearance, but we all owe it to ourselves to take some time to update our look. We shop for our children when it's time to go back to school...so why shouldn't we do that for ourselves at the start of a new season? I know it's hard to think about fall clothing when it's over 100 degress outside, but it is fast approaching and so is a new season to look fabulous in! Warm sweaters, boots, and scarves are starting to arrive in the department stores, and fashion magazines have given some hints to what’s popular for fall. But with summer still in full swing, it can be difficult to decide what to wear now and what to keep an eye out for when the weather (or at least the calendar) turns into September. However, if you wait to buy your fall purchases when it finally “feels” like fall, the best items – and the good deals – will be gone! The key to enhancing your closet isn’t to buy an entire new wardrobe; it’s adding certain pieces to the clothes and outfits you already own. Follow the tips below to see which items to purchase and, unfortunately, which to hide in the back of your closet until they become trendy once again.
FALL 2007
Designer collections are simple, elegant and glamorous. Gone are the many-layered looks from seasons past, Fall/Winter 2007 is minimalist, combined with strong and interesting fabrics and shapes (such as graphic prints, bold colors). Choose your look from either end of the spectrum: menswear-inspired (Katherine Hepburn, with wide soft pants, vests), or retro glamour from the 40's (cinched waists, pencil skirts, ultra-feminine). Shapes continue to be a lesson in geometry: triangle, hourglass, bell sleeves.
Metallic is still a very important look, and light silver will be replaced by gunmetal gray. And welcome back leather: jackets, and polished high-tech looks. Major colors this season include green, burnt orange (metallic sheen), deep purple, plaid & houndstooth, and the continuation of the summer trend of multi-colored patterns. Add any bright color to black for a fresh look. For handbag trends, it's all in the details this season - whether you choose an interesting texture, stylish detailed metallic, or even art-inspired, bags are anything but minimal.
The waist has also returned! Whether on a belted swing coat, a curvy dress or pencil skirt, the emphasis is on the waist. The fitted shift style dress provides a much-needed antidote to all the trapeze shapes of this past summer.
Dresses and Jackets Delicate Blouses and Pencil Skirts It's time for a very classic & glamorous look. Sky-high pumps with a form-fitting pencil skirt, topped off with a high-gloss shirt or top would be just the ticket. This is very 40s, with a wasp-waist (as much as your Spanx will allow!), or even just a flattering high-waist. You most definitely need to wear this look with confidence. As with all the new fashion trends for fall and winter, blouses are showing their soft feminine side. Many are off the shoulder and may have ruffles and bows. You might pair a ruffled silk blouse with lace at the V neckline, and belt it with ribbon at the waist to end up mid hip. The key is to keep them girlie, classic and feminine. The feminine shirts are also a perfect accent with jeans for a night out on the town or a day of shopping with the girls. Bags AND THE EVER CLASSIC CASHMERE WRAP...There's a reason that timeless fashion pieces retain their popularity: in this case, the cashmere shawl is the only coverup that you can stash in a tote, use on the airplane as a luxe blanket, and wear over jeans or a little black dress. It's not only chic and versatile, it's dramatic. Give me a call to spruce up your fall/winter wardrobe with a few classic pieces! Happy shopping!
